Publisher's Summary

Once, her heart was empty. Now it's filled with ice....

Ellen's therapist told her to forget the past, but the life she’s left with is boring. All she wants is to be happy and normal, but the approaching long, bleak nights of winter loom heavy before her, especially as she'll be alone.

But when the secrets her mother put in place to protect her are exposed, Ellen learns the frightening truth. Her history is darker than she imagined. She's not who she thinks she is, and the real her is a very different person to the one whom others have mistreated and exploited.

If there's hope of a future, Ellen must find answers about the past, and the new Ellen is less forgiving. This winter, there will be more than just discontent, and DI Barton will struggle in his hardest case to date.

How can he find the truth when all the victims and witnesses are dead?

Ross Greenwood writes gritty, heart-pounding thrillers, with twists aplenty and unforgettable endings. Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Stuart MacBride.

Lots of murders

The male reader for a female lead didn’t work for me in this case
Furthermore I found most characters uninteresting
I stuck with it and Ellen’ ruthlessness kept me there
All up ok ….it was free

Acting DCI Barton makes Policing Exciting

Each book has grabbed me right from the get go. The author is incredibly talented by slipping everyday chores, interactions and moments in time to make the killer relatable, sometimes a little too relatable as it is very easy to see and feel how the change from law abiding citizen to killer can happen with the build up of hurt and suffering that life throws at us.
Acting DCI Barton, his colleagues and family are a pleasure to read about. They are warm, open, caring and they all have their own unique personalities that are easy to want to spend more time with.
The author still manages to make me laugh out loud for each character and makes it impossible for me to complete anything else until the book is finished.
The narrator did a wonderful job again and kept me on my toes the whole way through never letting on that there’s a twist or two which he delivers well.
I highly recommend this series!

Brilliant

Wow what a great story. Mixed emotions the whole way through and a great insight into mental health definitely kept me entertained until the end.

the voices were so confusing.....

Ellen, she definitely sounds like a man talking but in fact is the female protagonist who Idid not wake up to the fact she was female until she was raped. By then it was too late and I had to disappointingly give up on this reading which may have been good if read by a top female narrator.

Another epic novel

Great narrator! He really tells the story well and switches between characters with ease. Gripping story with an interesting moral dilemma bringing sympathy for the killer. I’m really enjoying these books!

As always an excellent story

You need to look past the narration of this series, just suck it up as the stories are so amazing and complex. Always interesting hearing from the perpetrator, helps understand where and why they murder. This was a free book so an extra bonus.
