Publisher's Summary

Once, her heart was empty. Now it's filled with ice....

Ellen's therapist told her to forget the past, but the life she’s left with is boring. All she wants is to be happy and normal, but the approaching long, bleak nights of winter loom heavy before her, especially as she'll be alone.

But when the secrets her mother put in place to protect her are exposed, Ellen learns the frightening truth. Her history is darker than she imagined. She's not who she thinks she is, and the real her is a very different person to the one whom others have mistreated and exploited.

If there's hope of a future, Ellen must find answers about the past, and the new Ellen is less forgiving. This winter, there will be more than just discontent, and DI Barton will struggle in his hardest case to date.

How can he find the truth when all the victims and witnesses are dead?

Ross Greenwood writes gritty, heart-pounding thrillers, with twists aplenty and unforgettable endings. Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Stuart MacBride.

Harrowing and wonderfully absorbing

This story is an absolute triumph, this story starts, as with the first two, with the killer herself, to whom we are introduced this time, she is a sad and lonely woman with a sad history which, as the story unfolds, becomes more obviously tragic than even she was aware of for most of her life,
She commits a fair few murders throughout the book, each and every one was deserved in my opinion with the possible exception of one, in her view, but I'm not so convinced myself. She is drawn to unsuitable characters as friends and lovers which leads to an interesting twist which I loved.
DI Barton and his team have a tough time with this one, but he is determined to 'bring the killer to justice' which I suppose was his job, but irked me nonetheless, as she'd done a good job cleaning a few undesirables from 'his' city but yes, she could be dangerous (to the wrong sort of people).

narration ruined it for me

David Thorpe's accent didn't really change from playing the female and male characters so I have to say unless you are concentrating or listening for the name it's not easy to know who is speaking. This ruined it for me as the actual story was quite good. Although there is no real suspense as you know who the killer as at the start, so not a great one in my opinion.

Gripping listen.

Ross Greenwood never fails to deliver an excellent story, twists and turns keep your interest to the end. The level of detail is fantastic. David Thorpe has to be one of the best the races at the moment. Thank you can't wait for the next book to come out the Cold Killer in November of this year 2021.

A great story, well narrated

I'm really love this series of books. They are all fast paced, and very readable. I could listen to stories like these all day.

Bit of a let down

Enjoyed the first two books but sadly this one does not come up to scratch. There are too many occasions when we are given lessons on how to become an Inspector. Felt like a revision guide at times. Did not enjoy the story and felt the mental health aspect was dealt with too lightly.

Great story awful narration!

The story is good but honestly the narration is terribly wooden and stilted. It's like he's bored until the last quarter of the book! such a shame as the three in this series have good potential and I'm not sure if it's the writing or the narration that ends up stopping you develop any sense of depth in the characters.

Not for me

I could not finish this! The plot was so far fetched and I found the storyline tedious in places. In the end I skipped to the last couple of chapters just to find out if the story ended up as I predicted from the beginning and yes it did. Boring & very predictable which was not helped by the narration which was somewhat mediocre.

Loved this, A winning combination Greenwood and Thorpe

I discovered Ross Greenwood a few days ago when I tried out Snow Killer as it was in the £3 sale. I have since downloaded the rest of the series and listened to them all. They are all excellent stories, great characters and the narration is brilliant. David Thorpe really brings the characters to life. There is enough detail in the crime scenes to let your imagination do the rest. Ive found some authors description of crime scenes to be unnecessarily brutal. This is weighed up nicely with the relationships between the police team and the DIs home life. Cant wait to get on to the next book!
