About this listen
A gripping, pulse-pounding DI Barton thriller from the top 50 bestselling author, Ross Greenwood
Winter is coming, and Detective Inspector Barton is facing the toughest case of his career...
Ellen Toole's therapist told her to forget the past, but with her family story shrouded in secrecy, that’s easier said than done. The approaching long nights of winter loom threateningly in front of her, and with her mother on her death bed, Ellen has never felt more alone. When it becomes clear that her mother has kept secrets about a history darker than Ellen ever imagined, Ellen must find answers about the past if she has any hope for a future.
DI Barton and his team are still recovering from a particularly tough and grisly case, so a report of a kidnapping, followed by the discovery of two dead bodies, is the last thing they need. There’s a murderer on the loose, and the killer needs to be stopped before they strike again. This winter, there will be vengeance on Ellen's mind, and DI Barton will struggle with his hardest case to date.
How can Barton find the truth, when all the victims and witnesses are dead?

A degree of empathy with the 'villain'!
Another engrossing story of a murderer with a reason, if that ever can be the case?
And also a recurring theme from Greenwood of a hereditary propensity for episodic violence, nicely highlighted in the Epilogue and final sentence of the book.
Ellen, the Ice Killer, has been badly dealt with by a succession of men and over a 20 yr period progressively takes her revenge, but culminating in a final murder of a more innocent party guilty only of collusion which is just one step too far, and for which finally she is dealt her just deserts.
DI Barton and team continue to be well developed.
Once again, the denouement is a bit of a bloodbath.
Continues to be an excellent series.

Another epic novel
Great narrator! He really tells the story well and switches between characters with ease. Gripping story with an interesting moral dilemma bringing sympathy for the killer. I’m really enjoying these books!

Brilliant series
Ross Greenwood is a fantastic story teller. He has not only created a core set of likeable characters but also created ‘criminal’ characters who I find I have so much empathy for. Very clever. David Thorpe is a brilliant narrator who is a good match for the author’s stories. I

As always an excellent story
You need to look past the narration of this series, just suck it up as the stories are so amazing and complex. Always interesting hearing from the perpetrator, helps understand where and why they murder. This was a free book so an extra bonus.

Acting DCI Barton makes Policing Exciting
Each book has grabbed me right from the get go. The author is incredibly talented by slipping everyday chores, interactions and moments in time to make the killer relatable, sometimes a little too relatable as it is very easy to see and feel how the change from law abiding citizen to killer can happen with the build up of hurt and suffering that life throws at us.
Acting DCI Barton, his colleagues and family are a pleasure to read about. They are warm, open, caring and they all have their own unique personalities that are easy to want to spend more time with.
The author still manages to make me laugh out loud for each character and makes it impossible for me to complete anything else until the book is finished.
The narrator did a wonderful job again and kept me on my toes the whole way through never letting on that there’s a twist or two which he delivers well.
I highly recommend this series!
