Publisher's Summary

An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place - and realizing that family could be yours.

He expected nothing. But they gave him everything....

Linus Baker leads a quiet life. At 40, he has a tiny house with a devious cat and his beloved records for company. And at the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, he’s spent many dull years monitoring their orphanages.

Then one day, Linus is summoned by Extremely Upper Management and given a highly classified assignment. He must travel to an orphanage where six dangerous children reside, including the Antichrist. There, Linus must somehow determine if they could bring on the end of days. But their guardian, charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, will do anything to protect his wards. As Arthur and Linus grow ever closer, Linus must choose between duty and his dreams.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is an uplifting, heart-warming fantasy tale that’s become a New York Times, USA Today and Washington Post best seller.

A story about prejudice

More of a story about prejudice and the hardships of kids who are vilified. Less of a fantasy story of magic and adventures. I was a bit disappointed when I listened as I was hoping for an epic fantasy and really couldn’t help but feel the author was repeatedly banging on the predictable drum of woke ideology. I did enjoy the premise and the world building but the focus of the book felt to off kilter for me. I think people who may relate better to the characters in this book will enjoy it but I struggled to get into it. Narrator was a bit meh or maybe it was the recording quality.

Magic, messages and acceptance artfully captured!

Fell in love with Klune’s literary skills after reading ‘Bear, Otter and the Kid’ and the follow up titles! Struggled with a few subsequent books but was totally recaptured with ‘The House in the Cerulean Sea’! Definitely a reading requirement - it has spurred me to retry some earlier Klune titles. Storyline and characters captivating - listened every chance I had but didn’t want it to finish! Loved the way Linus grew throughout the story - and the way he burst the bubble constricting his life.

makes you care and not overwhelmed

This book was really nice! The main character is an iconic tired middleaged man that just wants happiness for everyone. every side character gets their moment and you start to care for every single one. Not much action really happens but you are just there for the journey. The conversations about prejudice are SO GOOD and really makes you think.
The narrator works well, some minor voices I would have changed but he does what he is supposed to better then some other narrators

Beautiful story

Did not want it to end. A lesson for all of us. Do not judge a book or person by its cover.

Sort of ok'ish

It has Terry Pratchet vibes. There are parts where it comes across as preachy. I like how innocently blasé the children are with their abilities. It's just the preachy parts that I disliked.

Brilliantly Narrated feel good story.

I loved this book and it was so brilliantly narrated. Everytime I heard the voice of Chauncey it made my heart smile. A real feel good story with wonderful characters about love and acceptance. This is the first book I have read by this author and the first book I have listened to with this narrator. I will definitely listen/read other books by T.J Klune or narrated by the Daniel Henning. 5*
