Publisher's Summary

Someone is about to die....

Someone is about to lie....

At the intimate house-warming party for her glorious ‘grand design’, Kathleen confides in her best friend, Beth, that she is terrified of one of their close friends but daren’t reveal which one. The guests are a tight-knit group, but Kathleen is convinced one of them is dangerous.

The next day Kathleen’s body is found at the foot of a cliff, and Beth must face the sickening truth that she may have been killed by one of their trusted friends. With little help from the police, Beth’s decides to seek answers.

All the friends have secrets they are desperate to hide, but only one of them is ready to kill to keep theirs safe....

The House Party is set on the Isle of Wight - insular, claustrophobic and with nowhere to run. Mary Grand has written a heart-stopping novel of secrets, betrayal and desire, perfect for fans of Louise Candlish and Lucy Foley.

A good story... after the first 5 chapters.

Sadly the first 5 chapters are choppy. The sentences are disjointed and do not flow. And it appears as if the author is poor at setting the scene.

After the first 5 chapters, however, the story flows better and it has more detail and interest. It is a very dialogue laden book, but the dialogue does improve as the story goes on.

The twists and turns are interesting and entertaining, and plausible in the story, so well done.
Not a challenging story, but an interesting one and the plot is good.
Worth a listen.

Very enjoyable

One of the things I liked most is that this is a read where nothing really happens. Instead, you're left to soak in the atmosphere and the characters. It's also predictable. Drama and a dozen twists and turns are not added just for the sake of it. This book is comfortable just letting the reader be - and I appreciated that.

What I liked

*Beth. Lovely 💕
*great narration
*Beth and Sammy's marriage
*Gemma
*Ollie 🐶
*Atmosphere. Cosy. Enjoyable.
*everyone'sasuspect 🔪
*whodunit reveal

Things to mention

*nothing actually happens at the house party
*do cabs not exist on the island? 🚕
*beth is definite each person did it at one point or another. Rinse and repeat.
*killer'svoiceisawful! 💀

Overall a very enjoyable listen. I will happily read more by this author and narrator.

Cleverly done

Very cleverly written the suspense in this book builds the whole way through as you try to work out who can be trusted and who can’t.

No bad but too long

This needed an edit and the narrator although ok really needed a bit more work on the characters.
I would have stopped but gave it a bit more time. Edit. It needed an edit.

Audible fan Sydney

Really enjoyed this story. A little slow in the middle but I kept changing my mind as to who the bad guy was. It all came together in the end. Well worth listening to.

Not well written.

No, while I was almost intrigued to know who the bad guy was, it became increasingly evident during this poorly devised and written book, who he was! Could only ever be him and for a really pathetic reason.
This book is similar to a submission by a 15 year old student as an end of year assignment. Messy, confused and at times inept writing, equalled only by poorly executed narration. A writer and narrator I will not be visiting again.
