Family is everything, even when it falls apart: discover the brand-new novel from the multi-million-copy bestselling author. Perfect for fans of Ann Patchett and Maggie O'Farrell.
There is a heatwave across Europe.
Goose and his three sisters gather at the family's house by Lake Orta in Piedmont, Italy.
Their father, a famous artist, has recently remarried a much younger woman and decamped to Italy to finish his masterpiece. Now he is dead and there is no sign of a painting.
Although the siblings have always been close, as they search for answers over that summer, the things they learn - about themselves, their father and their new stepmother - will drive them apart before they can come to any kind of understanding of what their father's legacy truly is.
Extraordinarily compelling, at heart this is a novel about sibling relationships and those hairline cracks that can appear within a family: what what happens when they splinter, and what it would take to mend them.
Featuring an exclusive interview between Rachel Joyce and bestselling author, Sarah Winman. Listen to the end for a fascinating insight into their writing processes and their experiences of narrating their audiobooks.
'A sharp, absorbing and emotionally intelligent novel.' Guardian
‘A beautifully written family drama ... Long after I finished the last page, I found I missed these characters – always the sign of a special book’ - GOOD HOUSEKEEPING
'Joyce, who was an actor before she turned exclusively to writing, modulates her [tone] with immense delicacy. It’s impossible not to feel the comedy inherent in the siblings’ well-worn to and fro, nor the sorrow when their bonds begin to break down.' – Financial Times

Read by the author
I came to Rachael Joyce via Harold but have The Music Shop and Miss Benson's Beetle in my head as ones I have loved. This story I found less ethereal and initially was disappointed. The interview she completed and the end rendered her storytelling more completely and I find myself sated with her words again.

Family Relationships Italy
Beautiful setting, with a delicious description of a family melded together, yet the fragility of their bond is tested. Believable characters wound around a central, lovable, unlikeable protagonist. Joyce's narration is perfect.

The Homemade God
Bravo Rachel Joyce! Bravo! The narration was sublime. Completely captivating with characters that entered my life and resonated in so many ways. So much satisfaction in having the author narrate their own book. Thank you!! Cannot wait for your next one.

Wow what a great listen!
A great story hard to put down. Very well read with each character well and the story perfectly voiced. Some books are so good I “Binge” listen. This was one of them.

Jury still out
Loved Miss Bensons Beetle but struggled to like any other character except for Goose in this novel. I kept listening to-wanted to keep listening-but I found the sisters highly flawed and hard to care about which impacted my response to the plot.
Aging male finally did in a classic redemption story but too late for family who were damaged by his selfishness and patriarchal history. Desperate children when he had no time in reality. Can’t really understand how Victor made millions on his art when not viewed as a real artist. Confusing overall and pointless here and there while being captivating - go figure!
Confusing it is!
