About this listen

In the city of Imardin, where magic and power walk hand-in-hand, a young street-girl, adopted by the Magicians’ Guild, finds herself at the centre of a terrible plot.

Sonea has learned much at the Magicians’ Guild and and the other novices now treat her with a grudging respect. But she cannot forget what she witnessed in the High Lord Akkarin’s underground chamber – or his warning that the realm’s ancient enemy is watching the Guild closely. Her old friend Cery now has an influential position among the Thieves, and good connections in high and low places. When an exotic stranger offers to help him with a secret task, Cery know he should refuse, but then …

As Akkarin reveals more of his knowledge, Sonea does not know who to believe, or what she most fears. Could the truth really be as terrifying as the High Lord claims? Does an ancient power threaten them all? Or is he trying to trick her into assisting him with his dark schemes?

The High Lord brings the stories and characters together and I couldn’t help but love the main characters.

Richard Aspel narrates this story well, giving so much life to the words written by Trudi Canavan.
Trudi writes an encapsulating story that grows with each book, even after finishing the book I often think of the story and find myself listening to it again.

Brilliant third book

Simply, this is one of the best audiobooks I've ever read. Canavan's dynamic and heart pounding epic conclusion to this trilogy is matched by Aspel's magnificent and masterful narration. Get it and you'll return to it many times because this truly is a timeless classic.

The best of its kind.

I have read this series a few times (and love it!) and decided to get try audio books this time around. For book 1, I purchased the version narrated by Kellie Bright, which was well narrated, but I was really disappointed when I realised how abridged the narration is (4 hours in, I realised I was already 3/4 through the book!) Really!? 1 credit for a 6-hour, seriously abridged read of the book is not worth it. I want the WHOLE story!

I had already purchased book 2 (the Novice) narrated by Richard Aspel for my daughter a year back, so I started listening to that version next, but was really frustrated with his interpretation of Akkarin (High Lord). In my mind, he is a young, dark, powerfull, brooding character, with a silky smooth voice. He is unfortunately read as a nasal, almost whinny old man. I just couldn't take it. I have read these books a few times because of how much I love Akkarin's characture. (In a movie, I think Henry Cavill would do perfectly). He is not a nasal, old man... So, to preserve the memory of my Akkarin, I'm returning this audio book and will curl up in bed with the hard cover version again instead :)

Love the series, not loving the audio books
