About this listen

Inspired by the incredible true story of how the people of Denmark saved their Jewish neighbours during WW2

Helsingør, Denmark, 1943

In the midst of the German occupation during World War Two, Inger Bredahl joins the underground resistance and risks her life to save members of Denmark’s Jewish community and help them escape to Sweden.

Copenhagen, 2018

Inger’s granddaughter, Cecilie Lund, is mourning her death when a mysterious discovery while cleaning out Inger’s flat leads past and present to intersect. As long-held secrets finally see the light of day, Cecilie learns the story of her grandmother’s courage and bravery, and of the power of friendship, love, and standing for what’s right…even when you have everything to lose.

An inspiring tale of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community.

I thought this was an interesting subject that could have been written a little better but it was still good. Just a bit too much of a love story with a lame ending than a true depiction of the horrors of that time and no real depth of what the people of Denmark did to save as many Jews as they could.

The narrator was brilliant though and I'll definitely watch out for more narrated by her.

Good, but not great story. Terrific narrator.

Very much enjoyed delving into Denmarks WWII difficulties. I shall look forward to more books by this author

A different look at WWII

This was a good story and the details about everyday life in a small Danish town during WWII were so interesting . Most of the characters were strong and I could engage with, (except 1). I felt like the ending was weak. It made me think the author had run out of time and needed to finish the story quickly and that was a shame. Also the reading was really well done, except for one thing- why did some characters have British , Cockney style accents , even though they were clearly Danish? It was quite disconcerting and jarring .

Enjoyed the story, but….

I was enjoying this story but one too many explanations about racing hearts, sideways glances and flushing necks was too much for me. It cheapened the tale and I cannot finish. A shame.

Spare me the romance
