In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighbourhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows.
As the story moves back in time to the 1930s and the characters' stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community - heaven and earth - that sustain us.

Marvellous listen
This is a wonderful and important story about American history around the 1939’s and the way different groups of immigrants live together. There’s much racism and prejudice but also tolerance and love. The characters are memorable and the narrator does an impressive job differentiating them.

How many stories become one big story.
Lovely wholesome story on the strength of love, loyalty and seeing people for who they are not what colour their skin is or their originates.

Heavy but worth the read!
I started on paperback for book club and I was getting very lost but I decided to continue on audio and I’m glad I did because the performance really helped and it’s a book that you should read, although it’s very hard at times. Left me in tears in the end but I’m grateful for it! 💕

The characters felt real and the storyline was interesting. I have also learnt a little more about the history and geography of the area.

The resilience of the oppressed…
There was so much to love in this story - the humaneness was the outstanding feature for me, when bereft of all the material necessities that fill our lives, we lose sight of the true importance of being humane. The narrator was magnificent. He read an authenticity to all the characters.
I felt humbled and deeply touched. An important read.
