About this listen

Audie Award, Autobiography/Memoir, 2017.

In his own words, the heavyweight champion of the world pulls no punches as he chronicles the battles he faced in and out of the ring in this fascinating memoir edited by Nobel Prize-winning novelist, Toni Morrison.

Growing up in the South, surrounded by racial bigotry and discrimination, Ali fought not just for a living, but also for respect and rewards far more precious than money or glory. He was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and the BBC. Ali redefined what it meant to be an athlete by giving hope to millions around the world and inspiring us all to fight for what is important to us.

This is a multifaceted portrait of Muhammad Ali only he could render: sports legend, unapologetic anti-war advocate, outrageous showman and gracious goodwill ambassador, fighter, lover, poet, and provocateur, and an irresistible force to be reckoned with.

Who better to tell the tale than the man who went the distance living it?

Critic Reviews

"It's uncanny how much narrator Dion Graham sounds like Ali. He has the same rhythm, inflection, and passion that The Champ had.... Graham makes us feel the pain Ali felt, both from the fights and from the world." ( AudioFile)

This autobiography is truly captivating and will leave you wanting to know even more about the man who became a legend and the undisputed heavyweight GOAT.

The voice acting is brilliant, providing an atmosphere and level to the story that sucks you in and makes you believe that you are really listening to the great man himself.

Exploring the racial and political aspects of Ali's career, this book gives you an insight into what drove him to make the decisions he made with his career and personal life and what drove him relentlessly forward to earning the World Heavyweight champion title.

A great listen, can not recommend enough.

First audible I’ve ever listened too and I highly recommend it. Truely great story - would have loved it to include about his life after boxing but for what it is… amazing story!

Going into this novel, I was unprepared for how captivating and emotional Muhammad Ali’s story would be. Most definitely a tale of going against the odds.

Review of story: Honestly, reading is not always something I enjoy, yet the hidden messages in each chapter kept me enthralled. Perseverance, confidence and standing up for what you believe in were consistently touched on. From what Ali did, I learnt how to apply these to my own life and discuss them with those around me. Coming out of this novel I felt like I had learnt something, not only about Ali, but also about what I can do to become the best version of myself. One criticism I would have is the accuracy of the story. If you want a 100% accurate depiction of what Ali went through, you won’t find it in this novel. Yet, if this not a huge problem for you, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Review of narration: Overall, Graham did a great job. He certainly made the characters feel alive, and at times it felt like Ali was sitting there telling me his story. However, some parts were difficult to understand. Most notably, the conversation between Ali and Frazier was an arduous listen. Personally, I had trouble distinguishing who was talking at any one time. But after a while, when the conversation became less general, it became easier to understand.

Summary: Please give this book a go, despite its minor issues.

Fantastic story, narrated in an almost fantastic way

From Clay to Ali...great narration and story. An interesting insight into the boxing world back in the 60's and 70's mixed in with the political, cultural and racial attitudes of that era.
