Publisher's Summary

Considered one of the all-time great American works of fiction, Fitzgerald’s glorious yet ultimately tragic social satire on the Jazz Age encapsulates the exuberance, energy and decadence of an era. After the Great War, the mysterious Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, pursues wealth, riches and the lady he lost to another man with stoic determination. He buys a mansion across from her house and throws lavish parties to entice her. When Gatsby finally does reunite with Daisy Buchanan, tragic events are set in motion. Told through the eyes of his detached and omnipresent neighbour and friend, Nick Carraway, Fitzgerald’s succinct and powerful prose hints at the destruction and tragedy that awaits.

The male parts are well read -but not so the female

As with many audio books I have listened to - female characters read by some men - and true here unfortunately -come across as ditzy which denies any depth of character being conveyed. Disappointing - because you can’t here it in the sample. Well read otherwise.

Over hyped

Could have cut out about a quarter of the waffle in the story and still kept the theme. Moves very slowly as a result

Good narrator, underwhelming plot

Narrator was pretty good, but honestly I didn't really find the plot all that intriguing.

The best version of The Great Gatsby

I was going to buy a different audiobook of The Great Gatsby from a friend's recommendation but this one came out much more recently and I wanted to give it a try. Well worth it - in my opinion this version of Nick is much more true to his character and there are very few mistakes, if any!

flawless

Flawlessly narratted - A passionate and moving story that has withstood the test of time - a tragedy - I listened to it in a single session - spellbound from beginning to end.

There is a reason why this is a classic.

I purchased this book reluctantly because “it was not my kind of book but I had to read it because it was a classic”.
I’m really glad I bought the book. There is a reason for it to be a classic. At no point the book slows down or becomes boring; it flows perfectly and the main character is nothing I thought he would be. The narrator does a great job too.
