About this listen

The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss from the number one bestselling author of The Four Winds, The Nightingale and The Women.

‘A woman has to be tough as steel up here. You can’t count on anyone to save you and your children. You have to be willing to save yourselves’

Thirteen-year-old Leni is coming of age in a tumultuous time. Caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, she dares to hope that Alaska will lead to a better future for her family, and a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if it means following him into the unknown.

As Leni grows up in the shadow of her parents’ increasingly volatile marriage, she meets Matthew. And Matthew – thoughtful, kind, and brave – makes her believe in the possibility of a better life.

With her trademark combination of elegant prose and deeply drawn characters, Kristin Hannah celebrates the remarkable and enduring strength of women.

I was hesitant to buy this book - as sometimes such a hyped book can sometimes be a disappointment as everyone’s tastes are different…but I am happy to report I really enjoyed it. The writer needs to be commended for excellent writing skills and style. I cried more than once reading this book. It’s a great adventure to go on between the pages. Enjoy!

Loved this story. Had me in tears on many occasions. Would highly recommend reading. The topics of DV, PTSD, Family dynamics, Love and human frailty are covered so articulately and with so much depth and tenderness. What a wonderful writer Kristin is. Will be one of my handful of favourite books ever.

The Beautiful writing style that described the raw beauty and hardship of living in Alaska.

Nothing. I would listen again or find another off her books - I think I’m a new convert. I need to thank
My daughter for that!

Characters are relatable, story is enthralling from start to finish. Way to many nights after midnight listening, sad when it all came to an end. Definitely my new favourite author.

Kristin Hannah has done it again. The Great Alone is a wonderful story of family, adventure, beauty, love and strength interwoven with harsh realities of danger both environmental and from within the family itself. Expertly written and read it transports you to a world that many of us would never see.
I fortunately have seen it, the landscape the wildlife and even Mt Alyeska now a magnificent ski resort. Watching doll sheep clinging to rocks, bears hunting salmon, a moose and calves crossing the road, many bald eagles soaring and diving for fish while watching native fisherman bring in a catch.
It is a place that I recommend going to see and after reading this book you will want to book a trip.
Highly recommend this book

As above , breathtaking, but sad how DV is still as bad today and the law is there but doesn’t go far enough

Setting the scene of Alaska, one can imagine being there. Brilliant
