About this listen

RITA Award finalist and Christy Award winner Julie Klassen delivers historical romances brimming with the eloquence and intensity of Jane Austen. In an abandoned gatehouse on an old estate, Mariah Aubrey lives in seclusion. She supports herself by writing novels in secret—at a time when such writing is considered improper and unladylike. Soon the wealthy and ambitious Captain Bryant leases the estate and is intrigued by the beautiful girl in the gatehouse. But will he risk his plans—and his heart—for a woman shadowed by scandal?

I loved this poignant story of being shunned but rising above all with God's help and showing His love to others

Fallen but so forgiven

This is one of Julie's best. Delightfull characters although I sometimes wondered would Mariah never learn! The narration was very good making the story very pleasant to listen to. Read and enjoy.

Very Good book

Having been blown away by The Silent Governess, I launched straight into this one and was not disappointed. This is another clever clean romance with twists and turns. Again, there is reference to God and faith but it is suitably appropriate to the times (and the storyline) and not overdone. Mariah is a good egg despite her ruination and I like that she held her own and could teach others a thing or two about kindness. I also enjoyed the narration. I recommend.

Another goodie by Julie Klassen

Truly loved the story. It had the sadness of the time, harshness of the penalties, and those who were well to do overpowered any rights of those who were not financial. Seems very much like today’s Ways.

I enjoyed this weaving story with tales woven around other tales. and the happy ending for all. 😊

story within a story

Julie Klaassen always writes stories with a lot of characters who move the hero and heroine along. This one doesn’t disappoint. The author must have a large map to keep track of all the elements because in the end they are all drawn together to round off the conclusion. That’s no mean feat… Perhaps in this story I should refer to a naval chart instead of a map.

I really loved this storyline.

This story is so boring fell a sleep listening to it I hate it when I waste my credit or money on a book.

Boring

I liked the tone which matched the era. There were some ridiculous plot lines whilst, at the same time, not much happened and yet too much happened. Too many characters and story arcs. Too much hand-wringing and self-chastisement whilst not really reacting realistically. Narrator was competent & her accent was OK

Too long!
