Publisher's Summary

'You need to choose, Kiva. It's him or us. Them or us. You can't have it both ways.'

Kiva Meridan is a survivor.

Not only did she survive Zalindov Prison, but also the deadly Trial by Ordeal. Now, Kiva's purpose goes beyond survival to vengeance. For the past 10 years, her only goal was to reunite with her family and destroy the people responsible for ruining their lives. But now that she has escaped Zalindov, her mission has become more complicated than ever.

As Kiva settles into her new life in the capital, she discovers she wasn't the only one who suffered while she was in Zalindov - her siblings and their beliefs have changed, too. Soon it's not just her enemies she's keeping secrets from, but her own family as well.

Outside the city walls, tensions are brewing from the rebels, along with whispers of a growing threat from the northern kingdoms. Kiva's allegiances are more important than ever, but she's beginning to question where they truly lie. To survive this time, she'll have to navigate a complicated web of lies before both sides of the battle turn against her and she loses everything.

Doesn't Suffer from Secondary Book Syndrome.

Better than the first.

All characters are rich in nature and grow with development, romance is pleasant but mild and vanilla (Sorry, sauce isn't always spicy with YA), villains are capable and aggressive, what you see of the world is rich, plot is somewhat predictable...until it isn't.

Enjoy 😈

Just as good as the first

Another great instalment, the world building and character development is very good. And the story keeps getting better.

a struggle

I tried I really did but, I just couldn't handle some of the new characters.

The siblings annoyed me, being stuck in Kiva's head annoyed me.

having to undertake the building of a new setting was hard, but I could have got through it if I didn't have to listen to Zuli both when she was talking or when Kiva continuously remembers her saying stuff.

Kiva's blindness to hee family despite every action she sees and what she is outright told is unbelievable I do not know how she can ever redeem herself.

if you haven't started book 1 The Prison Healer, my advice is don't because book 2 is a massive exercise in frustration that nearly broke me.

Frustrating

The overall story is engaging but kiva is so naive and stupid that it makes it the story extremely frustrating. So many stupid decisions made that it weakens the plot. I usually finish books in a few days but this has taken me months.

another unbelievably dance main character who couldn't work out the obvious

the story was good, but its always frustrating when the reader works out what's going on and the protagonist just skips through the plot in denial missing extremely obvious clues.
was also frustrated by how often Kiva had to be rescued. She literally didn't rescue herself once.
finally, really hate that she now has to be perfect, that her grandmother said their is no room for error in her choices etc. not only is that boring, it's also shitty in this day and age to include a modonna character. everyone needs room to grow. light vs dark doesn't have to be perfection vs manipulation.

Disappointing

Loved the first book and I did like continuing to explore the rich world created, but what happened to the amazing wise, kind and empathetic Kiva. From nowhere she starts having a boring internal struggle with a whole vengeance streak that is so out of character and so frustrating. So disappointed that a love strong character turned so weak and relinquished all trace of wisdom.
