Publisher's Summary
In this short thriller from number one New York Times best-selling authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, narrated by actress Kate Mara, a young woman’s dream getaway becomes her worst nightmare.
Prepare yourself for a transformative experience. Sometimes, life’s setbacks contain hidden gifts. Here at Lakewood, you’ll find the space to unwrap them.
A weekend at the Lakewood Retreat is exactly what Chloe Powell needs. Freshly unemployed after her boss loses a reelection campaign, the former press secretary desperately wants a break from the bustle of Washington, DC. A flier posted at her yoga studio leads her to the getaway, which looks amazing: Organic meals, celebrity testimonials, and a serene private property within driving distance of the city.
It’s so perfect, in fact, that Chloe’s barely bothered by the intensely personal questions she’s asked in her application, or the unnerving social experiments her enigmatic host, Sebastian, imposes on her once she arrives at his remote cabin. But when a mysterious new guest shows up, Chloe can no longer suppress her rising panic: This place is not at all what it seems.
A pulse-pounding story from the first minute to the last, The Getaway explores the weight of the small choices we make every day, and their staggering, unintended consequences.

Engaging story. Worth a listen.
A story without much depth but accomplishes what it aims to do: keep you hooked to see what happens next. The amateurish writing style stood out quite a bit during parts of this story but it didn't hinder my enjoyment. I wasn't expecting greatness; I just was expecting an engaging story and this delivered. I was going to give 3 stars based on the writing being subpar at times but this short story earned one of those stars back by keeping my attention and being enjoyable despite it's flaws.

Skip This One
Oddly enough, the narrator’s voice was almost monotone and flat as she read what was supposed to be a suspense story. The story itself is a snooze, and every plot point is made terribly obvious. Skip this one and keep looking. I’m also incredibly tired of stories about whack job men praying upon young women. Why is terrorizing and murdering women still seen as such an entertaining theme? It doesn’t matter that two women wrote this; it just makes them complicit in this violence porn.

it was... good.
I haven't enjoyed listening to most of the books that I have tried so far. This one started a little on the slow side but turned into quite the good "listen".

Edge of your seat!
Excellent book, kept me on the edge of my seat. Had a hard time "putting it down". Kate Mara has an excellent voice and I am looking for other books by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen with Kate Mara narrating.

Sick of these violent plots against women with only one ending...
Yes, the obsessive man exists in real-life. Very few go to the absurd lengths Sebastian went to in this novella. Not one victim of casualty was male, even the poor Uber driver was female.
You could see the ending a mile away & wish they’d incorporated a better storyline instead of the cliched ones. Mara did okay with narration, she didn’t change up her female voices, but she’s a film actor not voiceover artist. 4 stars for her.

Sebastian is a Bad Dude
This book is great! It’s very well written and keeps your suspense level high until the end. The ending was wild and unexpected. Sebastians craziness should made into a Criminal Minds episode.

Less is more
A pleasing noiresque story from these 2 authors who never disappoint. After several overly long and meh “thrillers” it was refreshing to listen to a taught story well told and narrated.
