Publisher's Summary

In this riveting memoir, Gilmour recounts the call-outs that summer: some dangerous, some gruesome, some downright ridiculous. And we meet fellow paramedic John who, they say, can get a laugh out of everyone except the dead. As the city heats up that summer, however, even John begins to lose his sense of humour. People are unravelling - and Benjamin and John are no exception.

The Gap is a vivid portrait of the lead-up to Christmas; an unflinching, no-holds-barred look at what happens after the triple-zero call is made - the drugs, nightclubs, brothels, drunk rich kids, billionaires, domestic disputes, the elderly, emergency births, even a kidnapping. Patients share their innermost feelings, and we witness their loneliness, their despair and their hopes.

Beautifully written and sharply observed, The Gap exposes the fragility of our lives and the lengths the paramedics will go to to try to save us.

“Hard to stop listening once you’ve started...”

A great insite into the working lives of a paramedic. At times funny, at times sad... dealing with everything from a tooth ache to last breaths, along with open and honest accounts of the mental health issues that our emergency service personnel face every day. Totally loved this book!

Fantastic recount of life as a Bondi paramedic.

If I could give it 6 stars I would! Fascinating insight into the daily life of a city paramedic. If you are looking for an exciting read with a balance of humour and seriousness, I would highly recommend this book.

I’m so pleased Benjamin wrote this book. I now have a better understanding and empathy for my fellow human beings who are first at the scene.

Insightful, thoughtful and emotionally challenging

Great thoughtful writing that gave such an interesting insight into the "normal" lives of paramedic's in Sydney.

Made me think and question things I never would have thought of and really made me reconsider my perspective on Australia's EMS and first responders.

From a future paramedic

This is a brilliant book to listen to. It made me think, laugh, cry and gave me even more drive to become a paramedic. It gave me a better understanding of the struggles medical staff go through, some preparation to start my career with and a greater respect for our front line heroes. Thank you

A powerful story of life in Emergency Services.

Captivating in the honesty with which this story is told, I felt connected to the emotional roller coaster described so clearly.
I laughed out loud and shed a tear. Everyone needs to hear this story. It’s raw but funny. It’s confronting but real. It’s about real people doing their job. Congratulations on being confident enough to share this story and thank you.

sobering, funny, insightful

Thank you Benjamin for sharing your story. Thank you for your service. I know you hate it but... you are a hero and an angle. Not everyone can do what you and other emergency service ppl can do and that is what makes you guys so special.

Really interesting listen

Well worth the listen - diversity of a paramedic - the stress and trauma ptsd, the stress the profession brings to a relationship, this profession can bring to the dedicated medics that do this crazy job.
The narration was great -
