Story
As both a modern man and medieval king, David is committed to transforming medieval England into his own version of Avalon. Not everyone supports his ideals, however, and having offended the pope by welcoming Jews and heretics into England, David is summoned to Canterbury to explain himself.
Publisher's Summary
May 1144. Newly wedded, Gareth and Gwen travel across the border into England on a diplomatic mission with Prince Hywel of Wales. Within moments of their arrival, however, the mission goes awry and a murder case drops (literally) at their feet.
Hindered at every turn by a climate of civil war and constantly shifting political alliances, Gareth and Gwen race to solve the murder and expose a plot that threatens not only their lives, but the life of the future king of England himself.
Murder, intrigue, and treachery take center stage in The Fourth Horseman, the third Gareth & Gwen medieval mystery.

Interesting as with all the others
Now I confess, I do know quite a bit about the whole Stephen/Maud civil war, and about the people themselves. Hearing a tale woven into that timeline, with just a few of the main participants of the era thrown in here and there was quite fascinating. I always enjoy Sarah's stories of course, and this one was no exception. It was nicely wrapped in layers of fact and fiction.
Technical wise, no jerks or weird stops usually associated with dropping signal or internet connections. No bouncing back to a chapter I've already listened to either. It was a good flow. Ms. Schroeder did a lovely job as always.

Narrator quite spoils the story
I really do like the stories but why oh why can we not have a welsh speaking narrator? I am persevering but the ghastly efforts of welsh accents makes it very hard. I dread going on to the next book. I am not game to see who does the reading!

Really like this mystery series
I like these mysteries because they are often based on real stories and are true mysteries where you get to try and figure out who dun it. Like Agatha Cristie or the Thin Man. I love the husband and wife duo. And the authenticity of the history and the true to life setting. It is a great series.

Chock full of history and intrigue - great historical cozy!
The Gwen and Gareth Medieval Mysteries are usually set in awakes, but in this book our newly husband and wife sleuths are traveling with the Welsh Princes to Newcastle in England during the civil war between Empress Maud and King Stephen. On arrival, someone literally dumps a dead body at Gwen's feet. Out of their own element and out of their jurisdiction, so to speak, Gwen and Garett are caught up in what becomes a series of murders and political intrigue of dizzying proportions.
What a fantastic telling and great narration. With so many players involved in the story, I can easily overlook the narrator tripping over character voicing in a couple places. I quickly knew who was speaking and can't let any of that detract from my overall enjoyment.
Love this series and looking forward to the next book both in print and in Audible format.
