Story
Jack Wade, a claims adjuster for California Fire and Life Mutual Insurance Company, is one of the best arson investigators around. He's a man who knows fire, who can read the traces it leaves behind like a roadmap. When he's called in to examine an unusual claim, the tracks of the fire tell him that something's wrong. So wrong that he violates his own cardinal rule - "You don't get personal, you don't get emotional. Whatever you do, you don't get involved" - and plunges into the case.

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Story
Meet John Milton. He considers himself an artisan. A craftsman. His trade is murder. Milton is the man the government sends after you when everything else has failed. Ruthless. Brilliant. Anonymous. Lethal. You wouldn't pick him out of a crowd but you wouldn't want to be on his list. In this second dip into his case files (see 1000 Yards for a further novella), Milton is sent to Italy to investigate the death of a colleague from Group 15.

Publisher's Summary
"Intensely human in its tragic details, positively Shakespearian in its epic sweep - probably the best cop novel ever written." (Lee Child)
Don Winslow, the acclaimed, award-winning, best-selling author of The Cartel and The Power of the Dog, delivers a cinematic epic as explosive, powerful and unforgettable as Mystic River and The Wire.
"The Force is mesmerizing, a triumph. Think The Godfather, only with cops. It's that good." (Stephen King)
"Hard-core, jaw-dropping goodness...you'll be turning the pages so quickly, you'll blister your fingers." (Ian Rankin)
All Denny Malone wants is to be a good cop.
Malone and his crew are an elite NYPD special unit given carte blanche to fight gangs, drugs and guns. Every day and every night for 18 years, Malone has served on the front lines, witnessing the hurt, the dead, the victims, the perps. He's done whatever it takes to serve and protect in a city built by ambition and corruption, where no one is clean - including Malone himself.
What only a few know is that Denny Malone is dirty. Now he's caught in a trap and being squeezed by the Feds, and he must walk the thin line between betraying his brothers and partners, the Job, his family, and the woman he loves, trying to survive, body and soul, while the city teeters on the brink of a racial conflagration that could destroy them all.
Based on years of research inside the NYPD, The Force is a searing portrait of a city on the brink and of a courageous, heroic, and deeply flawed man who stands at the edge of its abyss.
"Nobody understands the disaster of corruption better than Don Winslow. The Force exposes the dawning horror of how it eats into the best intentions." (Val McDermid)
"If you've never read Don Winslow before than stop what you're doing RIGHT NOW and read this book. How can I adequately describe the utter visceral genius of it? It's like The Godfather meets The Wire. Dennis Lehane crossed with Joseph Wambaugh. Shakespearean tragedy with a New York accent. Quite simply, The Force is a masterpiece." (Simon Toyne)
'[An] epic novel of devastating moral complexity.... Fans of modern masters such as Don DeLillo, Richard Price, and George Pelecanos will be richly rewarded." (Publishers Weekly)
"Don Winslow is the Martin Scorsese of crime literature and this is his tour de force." (Australian Women's Weekly)

This was intensely enjoyable. The narration was energetic and perfect. Can’t wait for the movie starring Matt Damon. More Don Winslow for me.

Amazing epic cop thriller.
A dynamic, compulsive thriller that never lets up, beautifully read, and with a wonderfully complex anti-hero.

Hard to sympathize with protagonist
Well crafted story with plenty of twists but hard to relate to main character. In the end he's just another cog in a corrupt machine.
The author goes too far romanticising a crooked cop.

Enthralling tale
Danny Malone’s search for justice in a corrupt environment makes for a gripping narrative until his final and very satisfying redemption. And the narrator’s performance is highly entertaining which enhances the author’s great story.

Just don’t get it
Well the first few chapters were read like it was a rap song and it lost me. I would argue with the other testimonials especially from world class authors are off the mark. I’m going back to Lee and Michael.
