About this listen

This psychological thriller follows a family to their Appalachian farmhouse where they encounter an unimaginable horror.

In the summer of 1994, psychologist Daniel Hill buys a rustic farmhouse nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia.

Along with his wife and teenage daughter, the family uproots their lives in Ohio and moves south. They are initially seduced by the natural beauty of the country setting. That soon changes when they discover a hidden room in the basement with a well, boarded shut and adorned with crucifixes.

Local legends about the previous owner being an exorcist come to light, but by then, all Hell has broken loose.

This 1990s horror novel is perfect for fans of family thriller books, stories of demonic possession, exorcism fiction, the occult, or thrillers like The Exorcist, A Head Full of Ghosts, and The Amityville Horror.

The story was good. I thought that the narrator’s cheerful tone took away from the spookiness.

Was genuinely scary.

Thoroughly enjoyable read

Good narration. The story however is just a very basic possession/exorcist story. It’s fine, but very forgettable.

This also had the most pointless subplot in it that just ate up time for no reason.

6/10

I saw this book be promoted in some horror book groups I’m in. The first two hours didn’t grip me as much as I wanted and I was tempted to return it, BUT I stuck it out and I’m glad. The middle and ending of the book were great and felt quite immersive. I just wish the beginning grabbed me as much as it seemed to grab everyone else.
Overall, a great book just short of 5 stars ☺️

Slow start, great ending

It felt like a book written in a way to be very easily translated to a movie. Some strange wording that kept being reused, only finished listening to it so I didn’t waste my credit but came out of it a little disgruntle and quite disappointed by the experience. The depiction of horrific supernatural scenes probably it’s “kind-of-ok” saving grace.

Not what I was expecting
