Publisher's Summary

The body of a local teenage boy is found on the beach of a sleepy northern New South Wales town. David went for an evening swim and got into trouble . . . at least, that's what it looks like.

Three weeks before, Leila, a young backpacker, didn't turn up for her shift at the local cafe. Benny, the owner, isn't worried. It happens—backpackers are always on the move. There'll be another one.

One of the locals, Adrian, has been a help to Benny. He's found him a nice little sideline. Not exactly legal. Is that all Adrian is arranging on the coast? He once was a cop but has he gone bad?

And in the back-blocks outside town, a bikie gang is gearing up for a large consignment from South America.

Murder, drugs, liaisons and lies are stirring up this small coastal town.

With Bryan Brown's characteristic laconic storytelling—humorous, tough and suspenseful—the secrets of this seemingly idyllic town slowly come to the surface.

'A work of rattling and serpentine suspense … gripping and sinuous and so, so good.' Trent Dalton

'Uniquely Australian and uncommonly good, I could hear the author's voice in every spare, haunting line. More please.' - Michael Robotham

'My friend Bryan Brown, quite apart from his other manifold talents, turns out to be an excellent writer. An authentic voice; highly imaginative yet completely believable, with a flair for fully realised characters and a gripping narrative … a great storyteller. This is utterly baffling. I'm furious.' - Sam Neill

Language

The language (swearing)was over the top and Brian Brown spoke too fast. Not finishing it!

A Ripper Yarn!

Thoroughly enjoyed it, happy to recommend.
Bryan's narration was perfect (probably helps that he wrote the book).
There are just enough Aussie euphemisms and Bryan's drawl was exactly how it should have been delivered.
Waiting for another one!!!

Enjoyable Australiana

A really good tale with many relatable characters.
Aboriginal aspects of the book are over explained and a little preachy but can plow through those parts. Only reason the review isn't all 5 stars.
Bryan Browns narrating is terrific.

Brilliant!

I absolutely loved this book, and Bryan's reading of it.
I really hope BB is flat out writing his next book... maybe some kind of sequel on the coast? Can't wait!

Loved it!!!

As if one talent is not enough, masterful and famous for great acting skills, Bryan Brown has written most captivating thriller.
I was enthralled by how well it was written and performed.
Chillingly real story set in australian backpackers paradise, so full of sunshine on the surface, loaden with troubled people and stories.
All very real, dysfunctional families, emotional trauma, unscrupulous villains, also real people you would enjoy knowing , each with fascinating past , captured on one tangled web life and evil lurking underneath the calm.
Its keeping the reader on seat's edge, It definitely kept me glued to my phone, where I keep my audible app.
It filled my 2 days with nothing much than listening intensely to how the story develops.
When it ended, I wanted more.
Bravo Bryanand thank you.

It’s all about the story

I listened to The Drowning over 36 hrs- fantastic. Helped by the fact the BB narrated it. Took me on a journey into a small community on the east coast of Australia. Great characters and plot development. Doesn’t try to be something it isn’t. Just a good Australian story!

Hooked from the beginning

Beautifully written and narrated by Bryan. The characters are real, the locations familiar while interesting with some great Aussie speak. I see an opening for the next book.
