About this listen

From a tender age little Evie struggled . . .

Evie spent her early years left outside on the step. With a drunk for a father and a neglectful mother, all little Evie has ever craved is a safe home and a normal existence.

Her young eyes had seen so much but this never tainted her spirit. If it wasn't for her best friend Gary, and friendly dog called Whisky, Evie might never have made it to her sixteenth birthday.

At sixteen she meets Ken, a sweet, brown-eyed boy, not much older than she is. Perhaps her fortunes have changed? But as soon as she gives over her heart she is betrayed, not for the first time in her young life . . .

Will Evie ever find the love and warmth she's always craved?

I cried my eyes out not only reading but listening to this story. I just wanted to hug the main character Evie. She went through some much turmoil and in the end she truely discovers about what family actually is and what it actually means to have love of a family.

Absolutely beautiful and tearful story

Childhood memories. Birmingham in the 60's. Children playing in the streets. Childhood friendahips. All this and more in this lovely story of Evie & her family she so desperately wanted to be accepted by. Do you often wonder what happened to the kids you grew up with? Can you picture the streets you all played in? The kid fights that went on? Have you gone back to visit & found it just as you remembered? This story will capture your heart as well as your memories as you 'will' Evie on as she battles with what life throws at her
. Beautifully read & narrator even has the Brummie accent down pat! 👍

A beautiful story many would relate to

As always, Annie Aldington rises above all as a true leader in the narration of this genre of stories. Her heart and soul pours out into the stories, as if she is each and every character. I’ve listened to many postwar Britain stories, and this one in particular brought up some strong emotions from my own childhood, which was very similar to the main character‘s. I couldn’t understand why I was feeling, so disturbed and unsettled until I realised that it was deep, seated emotions coming up from my past. I guess there’s more work to be done. Thank you to the two Annie’s for bringing this book to the world.

Beautifully narrated. Sadness and triumph. Made me cry.
