About this listen

Hunter. Worker. Legend. The untold story of the dog's role in building a nation.

The Dogs That Made Australia pays tribute to the dogs that gave their all for our prosperity: the fearless hounds that saved fledgling colonies from famine; the courageous heelers and tireless collies that powered the rise of beef and wool; the tough little home-grown terriers that protected the homestead and garden; and the extraordinary police dogs, ahead of their time, loved by the nation. The selfless exploits of our heroic dogs are writ indelibly in our nation's heritage and identity.

The Dogs That Made Australia is a vivid and meticulously researched history of Australia told from the perspectives of the dingo and of the dogs that were imported and developed here, as well as the humans who loved, feared and worked them.

"A highly readable book about Australia's dog heroes and their contribution to Australia's development. This is a book for the ages. I loved every page!" (Tony Parsons, OAM, author of The Kelpie)

I greatly enjoyed the subject matter and learned a lot, getting a different perspective on Australian history. A few times though I found the authors assumptions about dogs, a bit over anthropomorphic and there were times when i found some assumptions he made about people etc well, interesting. But overall a great listen. Was sorry when it ended…

Enjoyable book, like listening to your grandad tell an old story. Only downside is it felt slightly repetitive but other than that a lovely listen.

What an absolute piece of gold this book is! Inspired by my beautiful kelpie dog I wanted to know everything there was to know about the breed. I feel more than lucky to have found this book early in my search, as evidently, there is a lot of misinformation on the topic.

The historical research and critical thinking throughout this masterpiece is bloody fantastic! It is as Australian as can be, with the kind of lyrical humour that has characterised our great country and does not condescend one iota to the reader.

I actually don't think there is a single Australian from any walk of life that would not thoroughly enjoy this book (except for Robert Koleski, but then, he's long dead).

Thank you Guy, I'll be setting up an hour on the phone for your advice with my kelpie soon.

A pure delight.

Liked the straight forward storytelling but classic Australian humour wrapped up in a compact storyline. If you love dogs then you'll love this book.

Entertaining and informative

There was too much time spent talking about irrelevant people, dates and places.
This took up a huge part of the book and was not necessary.
Disappointing.

Too much irrelevant information
