Publisher's Summary

In 1540, newly married and pregnant Isobel Devlin vanished from a tiny island in Lancashire, never to be seen again.

In 2020, leaving London for the first time since the pandemic began, Nicole Rayburn and Kyle Walsh head to a guesthouse in the Lake District for a much-needed holiday. Across from the historic manor house, on an island in the middle of a lake, are the ruins of Montrose Abbey, the last known abode of Lady Isobel Devlin. Intrigued, Nicole begins to research Lady Isobel’s disappearance as the subject for a new book and calls on her history-loving friend Reverend Hargreaves for help.

As Nicole unearths long-forgotten truths about the mysterious Lady Devlin, finding many gaping holes in the story of her disappearance, she must fight for her own happiness against a rival whose claim to Kyle’s heart might be stronger than she expected.

Excellent!

I am a fan of Irina Shapiro’s books and this one did not disappoint! My favorite series is Wonderland but Echoes is a very close second. This one is similar to Echoes with the dual time period and stories. I can’t wait to see what Nicole and Kyle run into next! Brilliant!

Fantastic dual pst and present storyline

I so love the continuation of Nicole and Kyle’s story. Beautiful written with Isabel in the 1500’s and Nicole in a present day covid pandemic. I loved seeing how Henry V111's decisions affected the people of England. Amazing narration combined with the beautiful writing of come to expect from Irina Shapiro is a true winning combination

Another amazing story by Irina Shapiro

Love this series. I look forward to the next one. Irina Shapiro writes so beautifully. Her stories never fail to deliver! My only issue is with the narrator. Her male voices are all the same. Otherwise the book is perfect.

Nicole Rayburn is quickly becoming a new favorite!

After reading The Hanging Tree, I couldn’t wait for The Devil’s Den and fortunately, Irina Shapiro sent me an early copy in exchange for a review. I certainly got the better end of that deal as I would GLADLY have paid for this book several times over. In The Devil’s Den, Nicole and Kyle continue their journey to uncovering mysteries that lend themselves to potential novels. They escape post pandemic to an idillic country estate to enjoy some rest from Covid restrictions and some R&R and instead stumble upon the mystery of what happens to the wife of Johnathan Devlin, a seemingly charming aristocrat with many dark secrets. Isabell, Johnathan’s third wife (unbeknownst to her) learns through the harsh treatment of her friend and confident Anne, that her husband is not as he seems. This begins Isabell’s journey to escape her life but it requires very careful planning and absolute secrecy without the ability to trust anyone, including her best friend or beloved father.

Irina Shapiro is one of my favorite authors and The Devil’s Den is an example of why. Her characters are uniquely complex and her stories are engaging from chapter one! If you enjoy getting lost in a story with some reality drama mixed in, she never disappoints. The drama began with Nicole, Kyle, and Len in The Hanging Tree and he comes back to haunt them in The Devil’s Den! I can’t wait for the next installment of Nicole’s story!

I was hooked from the beginning

Just like “The Hanging Tree” I was on edge wondering what was happening in both the present story and the past. Captivating tale with interesting characters. I loved Kyle and Nicole in the Hanging Tree and was excited to see their story continue here. Since I wasn’t expecting this to be a series, I am curious if there will be a 3rd installment.

Top Notch Historical Mystery

Irina Shapiro is one of my favorite suthors. I love how she weaves a present-day story into one of the past. Her female characters are strong, but very human showing a range of emotions. She is able to transport me into the lives of people who lived during fascinating periods of history to tell their story.

Thrilling mystery in parallel times

Once again Irina Shapiro weaves a fabulous tale, drawing the reader in and not letting go until the satisfying conclusion. The characters seem real and genuine.. they could live next door, they are so well created you feel you know them. I always eagerly await the next book.
