About this listen

Homicide Detective Max Rupert never fully accepted his wife's death, even when he believed that a reckless hit and run driver was the cause. But when he learns that in fact she was murdered, he devotes himself to hunting down her killers. Most of his life he had thought of himself as a decent man. But now he's so consumed with thoughts of retribution that he questions whether he will take that last step and enact the vengeance he longs for.

On a frozen lake near the US-Canadian border, he wrestles with a decision that could change his life forever, as his hatred threatens to turn him into the kind of person he has spent a career bringing to justice.

Critic Reviews

"Eskens infuses the old this-time-it's-personal trope with raw urgency, righteous indignation, and enough scorching action to melt every trace of the Minnesota snow in his finest hour to date." ( Kirkus, Starred Review)

R. C. Bray is the perfect narrator, as always, and fits the protagonist very well. The back and forth of the story kept the pace interesting and unraveled the plot in a nice, creative way. The casual twists and turns of the story meant it never got boring, however the lack of a major plot twist at the end left me feeling a little let down. Giving it 5 stars, but it's more like 4 1/2.

Quite a gripping story, albeit a tad short.

The end made it edgy and Niki and Max are fabulous. Very happy about Briggs.

Slow at first

This is the first time I have listened to any from this author and I loved it. Will definately try more of them. Also the narrator did a fantastic job. One of the few that I could not fault. 🙂

Unusual story line and awesome narrator.

I like the character of Max having read a few books by this author and being familiar with how he tells a story pulls me in

Lots of Intrigue

Picked up where the previous left off.

He’s got this plot twist down pat, just when you think you know it goes and turns upside down.

This is a brilliant series. Interwoven characters and plots that’s suck you in. I enjoyed that each book had a unique story but characters that were main or sub dependent on the book.

Such a great series

SO GOOD 😊

I usually enjoy Allen Eskens books much more than this one. I’m not sure if it was the monotone narrator or the somewhat rambling plot line, but this certainly isn’t his best book in my opinion.

Not to His Standard
