Publisher's Summary

In her new novel, Danielle Steel tells a riveting story of the dark side of motherhood.

Zoe Morgan's childhood was marked by her younger sister's tragic illness, watching as her parents dedicated themselves completely to her final days, and then later divorced. As a young woman, driven by these painful memories, Zoe set the bar high for herself, studying hard and pursuing a career in the nonprofit world, where her deep compassion towards disadvantaged children finds a focus.

When Zoe falls in love and has her own child, she is determined to be a perfect mother as well. But before long, old scars long dormant begin to pull Zoe to the edge of an abyss too terrifying to contemplate. As Zoe is haunted by the ghosts of the past, her story will become a race against time, and a tale of psychological suspense that no listener will soon forget.

Misleading summary

Easy listening however the story never really got off the ground. There were no twists, and the ending didn't seem convincing. Considering the subject matter it's surprising the story wasn't told from the main characters' POV's instead of just narrated from start to finish in a clinical way. The plot felt lacking and details repetitive. But I got through it in a couple of days so it can't have been terrible!

Not my favorite DS

I love DS, but this story definitely was not my favorite. Performance over the top drama. Story just ok on this one. I’ll never stop listening to DS though.

A Very Dark Novel, Not a Love Story

NO SPOILERS!! If you think you know Daniele Steel, your wrong. When I first saw this book in the mysteries and thrillers category, I thought it was categorized wrong since she is known for love stories. I’m glad I didn’t pre-judge the book based on what her typical genre is.

This book was very dark and absolutely not a love story. The story built suspense throughout and I highly recommend it for those like me, who love psychological thrillers.

I hope Daniel Steel continues her writing about the darker side of human nature. I highly recommend this one.

Subject Matter Super important!!

Not DS’s best. I appreciate the information behind the themes of the book as my Mother was a foster care parent, but I just expected a bit more from this book.

One of my favorite Danielle Steel books!!

I love it when Danielle Steel writes dark psychological thrillers like this! Enjoy them more than than even her love stories, which are very good. She does extensive research and writes about very important timely issues. Keep the suspense stories coming!

Oh...My...Goodness!

I read Danielle's comments about this book before I read it & know what a hard book it was for her to write & that she did extensive research about the subject. It's shocking & heartbreaking, that's for sure, but still a very good book.
Also, it is very different from her other books but holds a message I feel is extremely important for everyone to be aware of. As troubling as it was to read at times, I had to remember that there are way too many who are survivors of being treated like this, both young & the elderly. I will recommend this book to all I know, it's that important.
Thank you for maintaining the strength that it took to write this troubling story, Ms. Steel. I am appreciative!

Brace yourself DS fans.....

This is the darkest and most harrowing of Danielle Steele’s books, and I’ve listened to them all. The narrator is excellent and the story is fast paced and gripping but a hard listen and joyless. So grit your teeth and prepare yourself and if you can’t face sad stories about children, give this one a miss.

Slow Starter

Great twist and gripping story. Frustrating protagonist initially but with DS there’s always
method to the madness.
