Story
Peter Darwin was hoping for some quiet leave from the Foreign Office. Instead he found himself in the village of his childhood, at the service of a veterinary surgeon whose operating theater was rapidly acquiring an unwanted reputation as an abattoir. The sudden unexplained death of a string of valuable racehorses from one small area in Gloucestershire was a mystery the police couldn't solve. But Darwin was local. He remembered people and what was at stake. And now he knew enough to get himself killed.

At an annual party to celebrate the success of the racing season, everything seemed to be running well to form, including the need for more champagne. Then a runaway horsebox ploughed into the marquee. A witness to the terrible death and destruction, wine merchant Tony Beach knows it is just one of those tragic accidents. But when his expert advice is called into play over sub-standard alcohol in a local night club, connections start to click, and another person dies, horribly.

Story
The unexpected arrival of a new apprentice jockey at his father's racing stables heralds the beginning of a series of dark happenings for Neil Griffon. First his father suffers a grisly accident, then Neil is brutally assaulted and abducted. The price for his freedom will mean the betrayal and deception of those who trust Griffon most. But he has no choice: a no-compromise crime czar has made an ultimatum - that his own 18-year-old son be hired by Griffon's stables to ride the superstar horse, Archangel, in the Derby.
Publisher's Summary
A beautiful Italian girl driving home in an open top sports car, a little boy playing on a South Coast beach and the senior steward of the Jockey Club on his way to a press reception in Baltimore. One after the other they suffer the same nightmare ordeal - kidnapping. But there is one thing connecting these particular cases. For the Italian girl is a jockey, and the little boy an only son of a racehorse owner.
A picture of the person behind this international chain of crime starts to emerge - a lover of Verdi, a man with a cool and calculating brain and an aficionado of the racing world. Andrew Douglas, brought in to advise and help the victims and their families, proceeds with all his customary diplomacy and courage. Only to find himself playing a dangerous part: the role usually reserved for his clients.

Another winner by Dick Francis
Another winner. Tony Britton is excellent with his performance. You can easily visualize the characters from his distinctive way with each voice. The story is about a man working to recover kidnap victims and a jockey is kidnapped. The flow of the story keeps you waiting for the next happening and as usual, Dick Francis lets you into the mind of the main character. His characters are always someone I'd like very much. #AmateurDetective #GlobeTrotting #clever #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Excellent well worth listening to
If you could sum up The Danger (Unabridged) in three words, what would they be?
Great story, characters
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Danger (Unabridged)?
The realization of how overwhelming vulnerability was to each character during different parts of the story line was to them, no matter what their strengths were to deal with it
What about Tony Britton’s performance did you like?
I think that Tony Britton's always reads Dick Francis characters with good understanding of the overall plot.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
That there is still the internal fight that vulnerability can be perceived as you being less of a person, a victim, whereas the message of this book is that it can feel like this, but actually it's a state of being and not a reality.
