Publisher's Summary

A year has passed since the Dark Wizard Myrin attempted to take control of the Kingdom of Verania. Though the scars of the final battle remain, Veranians have come together in unity in order to rebuild. Good King Anthony sits on the throne once more, with Morgan of Shadows at his side.

However, a king is not immortal. One day, Anthony will step down, paving the way for his son, Grand Prince Justin, to assume the throne. And Justin wants anything but.

Unfortunately for him, he finds himself with bigger things to worry about than just becoming the ruler of a country. At the celebration of the might of Verania and its people, a delegation arrives, led by a man who calls himself a magician. This man represents the king of Yennbridge, who has come to claim what was promised to him years before: the hand of the firstborn son of the king and queen of Verania. With his ridiculous friends at his side—Sam, Ryan, Kevin, Gary, and Tiggy—Justin sets out to make the visiting king’s life a living hell. Which, of course, backfires spectacularly, and when the dust settles, Justin finds his friends changed in ways he can’t expect, leaving him standing alone.

Except he’s not as alone as he thinks, given the king of Yennbridge will do anything to prove he’s worthy of the frozen heart of the Ice Prince.

Prince Justin has finally met his match. Let the games begin.

This series with this narrator is perfection!

TJ Klune is brilliant but you add Michael Lesley and his performance with these characters, you get nothing but pure gold!!!

Really enjoyable

Out of the 5 books, this may actually be my favourite or equally favourite to the 1st book. The story is light, funny & I quite enjoyed the plot.

Another brilliant book

Have loved this series and I hope there is another chapter in the lives of these wonderful characters. Loved and would recommend the fairytales by this author also.

bit of a pre-emptive review

i'm only up to chapter 5 but some things are bothering me so much i need to write them down.

first, positives:
the story and characters continue to be stellar, i was so excited waiting for this to come out and i'm genuinely thrilled with everything related to the story. TJ Klune is really, really good at what they do and continues to be one of my favourite authors.

i'm also enjoying Michael Lesley's narration for the most part, he's very emotive and makes the story even more immersive and enjoyable with his accents and the way he plays the characters

that said, the negatives:

Gary has a blaccent. it's bothering me a fair bit, and it seems to be Lesley's choice rather than Klune's. it's bothering me that the over-dramatic, attention seeking, loud ANIMAL character that complains of racism as an ongoing joke through the series has been given a blaccent.
to add insult to injury, Lesley appears to be white.

Tiggy's voice bothers me too. He's a half-giant and he's the D*mb Muscle, part of this shown through his use of broken english.

Lesley chose to portray him with slurred, slow speech that brings to mind characterisations of intellectually disabled characters in media.
Not only is it just difficult to listen to as somebody with Auditory Processing Disorder(i really can't figure out what he's saying much of the time), it's incredibly ableist.

It's the same voice kids in the '90's did while calling somebody a r*tard and it's incredibly upsetting.
i don't know if i'm going to be able to finish the audiobook.
