Publisher's Summary

From multi-award-winning and Sunday Times best-selling author Jane Casey comes an incredibly exciting new Maeve Kerrigan crime thriller!

You've got to be in the club to know the truth.

Everyone's heard the rumours about elite gentlemen's clubs, where the champagne flows freely, the parties are the height of decadence...and the secrets are darker than you could possibly imagine.

DS Maeve Kerrigan finds herself in an unfamiliar world of wealth, luxury and ruthless behaviour when she investigates the murder of a young journalist, Paige Hargreaves. Paige was working on a story about the Chiron Club, a private society for the richest and most privileged men in London. Then she disappeared.

It's clear to Maeve that the members have many secrets. But Maeve is hiding secrets of her own - even from her partner, DI Josh Derwent. Will she uncover the truth about Paige’s death? Or will time run out for Maeve first?

Good but not one of her best

I love this series of books and always look forward to reading the next one. This last one however, was confusing at times with the back and forth of timelines. Each time the story headed into the past, it took me a while to establish the reasoning behind it. All in all though, Jane Casey has written another good book and I look forward to reading the continuing saga of Maeve and Derwent.

Best Book of the Series So Far

I raced through every single Maeve Kerrigan book in less than two weeks. Absolutely, totally addicted. I love, love, love this series.
A Cutting Place is the best in the lot, I think. Interesting how Casey's writing gets better and better. She has a tendency to be wordy, but she's been improving, especially over the last two books. Here the writing is PERFECT. Self-assured, direct, powerful. Not a word wasted.
The crime investigation is much better than all the other books. It's adventurous, varied, with twists and turns, and not TOO many overdone secondary characters. There are less long, interminable interviews and more direct investigation and sleuthing of clues, more action, even a very hilarious undercover scene. I do not read these books for the crime, which is mostly dull I hate to say, although this one as well as After the Fire was really good.
It's the personalities and relationships where she really shines, and this one just blew me away. I cannot remember another novel (recently) where I have been so completely involved with the characters. I listened breathless. I was blown away. I was so very affected by Maeve's story and what happens to her, and the evolving relationship with Derwent. It was so beautifully done. SO powerful. The emotions are real and big and believable. I've listened to a few chapters over and over. Masterful writing. She conveys so much in few words. Only a woman could have written this.
And the narrator was simply fantastic. Absolutely bloody fantastic. She really understood this story and it has been pure joy listening to her performance again and again.
Now I am in withdrawal and truly in mourning that I'm done with the series for now. Simply cannot wait for the next installment.

Story was good narrator was ok

The story was good. I love this series. And I may be biased because I’m a huge fan of Sara Coomes but this new narrator lacked the emotion and character the audiobooks usually possess. She did a good job was easy to understand but there were parts that should have been a bit more emotional that she seemed almost like she was reading something handwritten and she almost couldn’t make out the words so was speaking extra carefully and a bit slowly. Otherwise it was another win for Jane Casey

Bad narration but decent story (no spoilers)

Once again, this narrator is terrible. She just reads the book and I can’t tell which character is supposed to be speaking a lot of the time. The story is good but the main character’s personal life was a tangent I found difficult to believe. Not in her nature to behave this way (no spoilers).

Better and Better

These books just keep getting better and better. I have been hooked since the 1st book. The characters get more fleshed out and real with each book. Please Jane keep them coming !! My only complaint is that Sarah Coomes (previous narrator) was a better choice for Maeve's voice I think.

At last. A great one came along.

I read recently discovered Jane Casey. I listened to the Caroline Lennox narration before Sarah Coombes. They are both great. I like that Caroline makes them sound more classy (for lack of my vocabulary). These books are extremely well plotted and written. I have to get the rest of the books. I’m hooked. The byplay between Maeve and Josh is riveting.

Another winner for Jane Casey

This is one of my favorite series.

Body parts are discovered by a Thames mudlarker and Maeve and her team have their work cut out for them.

We see more of Maeve’s personal life with her boyfriend whom Josh isn’t fond of. No surprise! Josh’s past comes back to confront him. And I don’t like Georgia.

The last few chapters were tense as Maeve finds herself the victim rather than the investigator.

Excellent narration and I’m already waiting for the next book.

Best yet

Maeve Kerrigan has become my favorite fictional female detective. Jane Casey surrounds Maeve with characters and plotting that always hold my interest and never insult my intelligence. Always a cut above the usual mystery fare, the only problem I’m left with is what to read next the won’t seem crappy by comparison.

Classic Maeve and Derwent

I like how these two evolve. Maeve's developing self confidence in bits and spurts. Derwent mellowing in the same fashion. Their relationship evolves as they work a particularly grisly murder, complicated by each of their personal lives. I don't want to say anything more lest I spoil the plot. Needless to say, if you've been following the series, you'll love this installment. If you haven't read a Maeve Kerrigan book before, this book is as good as any to start with.

Wonderful stuff!

This long awaited tale in the series involving a Maeve and Joss is the best so far. That said, they are all 5* star reads. Both the story and the back story are compelling and exciting. The characters are richly drawn and Caroline Lennon’s narration is faultless as always. For anyone picking this up, I advise picking a quiet place where there will be no interruptions for the final chapter. It had me hiding away and on the edge of my seat. Enjoy!

6* book!

I love this series and this is the best yet, I hope there will be another book.

Get me! With the lexicon of words at my disposal I chose such a seemingly prosaic one as “love”. This book needs no hyperbole nor advertising hype, it literally speaks for itself. It’s beautifully written, with a mix of the mundane, suspense, humour, (which is very much like my own), no spoilers, but the “bamboo” made me laugh it was so perfect at that point, and I think the whole book is like that. The characters and relationships are real! And I’ll miss them.

I find myself veering between, tension, hope, sadness’s, holding my breath and smiling! For me, it’s that good.

The combination of Jane Casey, as author, and the superb narration by Caroline Lennon, is a marriage made in audiobook heaven.

I loved it! I dislike recommending books to friends as everyone has different taste. I await the next instalment.

Love this series

I can’t recommend this writer and this series highly enough. The main characters have matured as the series has progressed, and we get just enough of back stories to explain actions and motives. The plots are complicated but logical. Ms Lennon does her author and characters justice. I can’t wait for the next one.

You Won’t Be Able To Turn This Off

I’ve read or listened to all the Maeve Kerrigan series but have to say this is the best yet. Brilliantly plotted and paced, with many moments that had my heart in my mouth to the point that it was stressful! Caroline Lennon’s narration is fabulous, as always. I can’t recommend this highly enough and would give it more than 5 stars if I could!
