Publisher's Summary

An international business expert helps you understand and navigate cultural differences in this insightful and practical guide, perfect for both your work and personal life.

Americans precede anything negative with three nice comments; French, Dutch, Israelis, and Germans get straight to the point; Latin Americans and Asians are steeped in hierarchy; Scandinavians think the best boss is just one of the crowd. It's no surprise that when they try and talk to each other, chaos breaks out. In The Culture Map, INSEAD professor Erin Meyer is your guide through this subtle, sometimes treacherous terrain in which people from starkly different backgrounds are expected to work harmoniously together. She provides a field-tested model for decoding how cultural differences impact international business, and combines a smart analytical framework with practical, actionable advice.

Insightful, fun, and educational

Growing up in the Middle East, I found it both shocking and surprising how different Americans were in the way they related to others. Now I know why, and also why I had such a hard time adjusting to American culture.

This book does a fantastic job of showing with lots of fun, surprising, and embarrassing anecdotes why people from one culture struggle to relate to and do business with people from other cultures and vice versa.

I’ve spent decades talking to people from other cultures but it wasn’t until I read this book that I finally understood why and how to avoid some of the embarrassing mistakes I’ve made trying to make connections with folks from different cultures.

If you’re traveling to another country for business or pleasure, read this book before you even get on the plane. The book was entertaining, educational, surprising, and informative. Excellent narration. Definitely looking forward to listening to it again and again.

Incredible book! Enlightening and stimulating.

This book has helped me so much! I feel like I finally "get it" - So many situations and customs that have come up professionally and personally now makes so much more sense to me. I feel very empowered!

As a young, American professional working for a global company I have found myself in recent years traveling and doing business with partners from all over the world, from Brazil, to South Africa, India, through China and Japan. There are countless situations I simply felt unprepared for, which lead to feelings of discomfort. I knew I had to get my "act" together and quickly learn up in the area of International Business. I also love to travel often for pleasure and have found some countries more difficult to navigate than others. Needless to say, I struck gold with this book!

Erin Meyers' break down of the cultural landscape and the explicitly detailed use cases, along with their learning points, hit home in a way that resonates. I have already begun to apply tips and techniques with positive feedback thus far.

I feel so lucky and grateful to have come across this. I'm going to recommend this to my company's Employee Training and Development team as a potentially game-changing tool in our continued business abroad.

A brilliant structure to culture differences

A well-structured book helping to understand differences between people coming from different cultures. How people think, behave and expect others to behave. I love the constant reminders from Erin that the books should be read with the appreciate that every person has their individuality and that the books is not asking to build a bias. On the contrary, the books helps to understand the differences and treat them with respect

Great book

I recently moved from Brazil to UK, for a new job. Moved with my family, so it’s a new job for me and new life for us. The book was so useful to understand some situations that I already experienced in my professional life, working with multicultural teams and I’m sure it will help me deal better with my new life.

The most useful information I have read in 2020

Over 20 years of travelling and studying, I have spent more of my life abroad then my home country. What I have been doing is jump in the the local culture and left my own behind, after read this book I gain lots more knowledge of each culture and I will definitely try considerly keep some of my own culture and blend it into the local community where I am. it is a good way to spread my culture to the locals too. I think this book is not only for internationa business but for everyone who is living or traveling, we shall try to connect eathtoher in person to bring understanding and a deeper communication. I am grateful that I have read it !

To take with a pinch of salt

Good book. As a cultural hybrid myself I can relate to most of it quite well and it does provide you with some great insight.
Some of it isn't quite true compared to my experience.
Also, I'd be careful as her sample seems to consist mainly of her international student body. Teaching at one of the top ranking business schools in the world, I'm not sure how authentic the results are and how much they apply to 'normal' people.

Fascinating way of understanding cultural challenges

Erin has a great approach to help us understand different cross cultural challenges. Her methods explain how to deal with different situations in a structural way and concrete manner. As an Indonesian who was born and raised in Indonesia with an eastern family tradition - lived in India, Turkey, and now in France and work regularly in the UK, I encounter these cross cultural challenges in everyday’s life. After listening to this Culture Map audiobook, I feel like I am given the tool to handle the frustrations caused by these cross cultural challenges. Erin offers strategic solutions to be applied effectively in dealing with those challenges. Best audiobook of the year. Thumbs up and bravo Erin!
