Story
Seventeen-year-old Jenny is abducted in broad daylight and taken to a dilapidated, isolated house where she is chained and caged along with several other girls. Their captor is unpredictable, and as wily as he is cruel: he foils every one of their desperate attempts to escape...and once caught they rarely survive their punishment. Publisher's Summary
When the body of a young woman is discovered in a derelict cottage in the middle of Los Angeles National Forest, Homicide Detective Robert Hunter finds himself entering a horrific and recurring nightmare. Naked, strung from two wooden posts, the victim was sadistically tortured before meeting an excruciatingly painful death. All the skin has been ripped from her face - while she was still alive. On the nape of her neck has been carved a strange double cross: the signature of a psychopath known as the Crucifix Killer.
But that's impossible. Because two years ago, the Crucifix Killer was caught and executed. Could this therefore be a copycat killer? Or could the unthinkable be true? Is the real killer still out there, ready to embark once again on a vicious and violent killing spree, selecting his victims seemingly at random, taunting Robert Hunter with his inability to catch him?
Hunter and his rookie partner are about to enter a nightmare beyond imagining.

Portrayed brilliant dec with not so much brilliant mind
I expected more deductions and cleverness from Hunter. But I have enjoyed the story nonetheless. Killer’s reveal is quite surprising. The narrator fails to modulate into woman’s voice. It sounded rather gay to me.

NOT X-Files' Chris Carter. Immensely disappointing
Firstly - Audible have listed X-Files under 'by the same author'. The author's own website show's its NOT the same person. I've only ever had good experience with Audible so I suspect this was laziness rather than deliberate but please, Audible, find some way of un-linking this as this served as an endorsement that it shouldn't have.
Secondly - the book itself. Some readers have left fantastic reviews but I found this a very disappointing read. Hunter (The hero of the piece) was just too good to be true; Garcia, his obligatory rookie partner existed solely to (Very mechanically) enable Hunter to demonstrate his brilliance. Conjured images of 60s TV series of Batman - several times Garcia may as well have thumped his hand in realisation and let out a "Holy crime solving Hunter."
Formulaic, predictable, unsophisticated. Reminiscent of Blue Book 2: Watch Peter Jump. Gave this one star only because I couldn't work out how to give it no stars.

Wow.
This book is the definition of cliche, I couldn't get through the first 2 hours without cringing at the main character, his 'rookie' sidekick and all of the other characters stolen from a combination of every crime thriller out there.
I appreciate the narrator doing his best with the source material at least.
