Publisher's Summary

When Operation Surgical Strike, a police sting designed to catch Colombian drug traffickers, goes tragically wrong, suspicion quickly falls on one of the undercover police officers involved: 'Stegs' Jenner.

But Stegs is no ordinary cop. Something of a maverick, he has in the past played the role of a criminal just a little too well. Now suspended from duty, and with his close friend killed in the shootout, he determines to go it alone....

Great first book in series.

This is the first book in the series featuring Tina Boyd and her work, and life partner, John Gallon. I enjoyed the story, which was clever, even if at times I thought I hadn't completely got to grips with exactly what was going on. Ultimately, I discovered I didn't need to know every single little detail. I knew who was wearing the white hats and who had the black hats on, (or so I thought!). As an introduction book to a new series I thought we got enough of a taster of Tina and John to work out if we were going to find a connection to them and if it was enough to take us to the next book and onward. With a fast moving plot and cracking dialogue, I certainly want to see where this series goes and will definitely be buying the next one. Dave John provides excellent narration. My only complaint, and I say this all the time, and it's absolutely nothing to do with the quality writing, is why can't publishers make it very clear that this is the first, (or second or third etc) in a series? Why doesn't the title say, "The Crime Trade - Book 1 of the Tina Boyd series", so we know what we're getting into. I HATE it when I buy a book and it transpires that not only is it part of a series, it's book 3 and I'm then forced either to buy books 1 & 2, or start with 3 and read through in a haphazard fashion. It's incredibly misleading and quite shabby practise. OK, rant over, this is the FIRST book in the series and well worth investing in.

Story just fell apart half way through.

Started off believable but began to lose its way by chapter 20 where it all started unravelling into farcical nonsense. As a Londoner I found the narrators attempts to make this story any better quite laughable, in fact I wondered if this was meant to be a comedy, with Dr Who's Darlex invading in places. By chapter 30 I was really struggling to continue but stuck with it begrudgingly to see it out. This is the 2nd book I've had by this author and I am not planning to listen anymore. It reminded me of reading Mickey Spillaine paperbacks when I was a kid.

Excellent tale

A convoluted tale with many twists and turns between undercover cops and criminals. The excellent Tina Boyd plays a key role. The only negative point I would make is that the story is to,d via two main characters, Steg Jenner’s and Gallon. The former uses the third person, the latter the first person but the way the story u rolls it can be confusing as to who is speaking. Part from that I really enjoyed the book and the narrator did a good job with the various accents.

Excellent Narrator

A good story set in London with guns, drugs, thugs and police. The story got a bit confusing at times as to who was who and which side they were on - need to listen a couple of times more to get it all sorted out. The narrator had the London accents down to a ‘tee’ (or the lack of them).

Disappointing

I have been a fan of Simon Kernick for quite some time and he has always left me on the edge of my seat and can’t wait to keep listening.
But this one just doesn’t get going nothing like any of the other books I’ve enjoyed
The narration is also not up to Paul Thornleys great delivery
Sorry this one is not for me

Awful mock cockney fake ‘gangsta’ narrator

Had to stop listening after a short while. The narrator’s ‘hard man’ voice got completely in the way of the story. Should have listened to the sample first and saved a credit!
