About this listen

Read by Sibylla Budd, acclaimed for her roles in The Bet and The Secret Life of Us.

Victim ... or killer?

For the last decade, the small mountain town of Edenville in Victoria's high country has been haunted by the horrific murders of five hikers up on Jagged Ridge.

Also found dead near the scene was Bill 'Creeper' Durant, a bushland loner, expert deer-hunter, and a man with a known reputation for stalking campers . . .

Conclusion: murder-suicide. Case closed.

But as the ten-year anniversary of the massacre draws near, Detective Constable Sally White - the only officer at Edenville's modest police station - finds herself drawn into the dark world of the notorious Durant family.

Lex Durant, in particular, has started to publicly protest his brother's innocence and accuse the police of persecution.

As Sally combs the investigation to prove him wrong, it becomes all too clear that each murdered hiker had skeletons in their closet - and possible enemies in their past . . .©2024 Margaret Hickey (P)2024 Penguin Random House Australia Audio

There’s a mistake at the end of the audio book. The extract from a previous novel referred to by the narrator as Stonetown is actually an excerpt from her novel Broken Bay which is a terrific read with well rounded recognizable characters.

The setting of The Creeper will be recognizable to those who have spent any time in country towns.

The US reviewer who commented that it was unrealistic that a police officer would go into the bush without a gun is not aware that Victorian police don’t always carry guns.

A fast paced thriller, an easy read, very engaging & relatable. Raises contemporary ethical issues about our online cultures, rural policing & the media.

Another engaging Margaret Hickey novel

Interesting plot but not well written in the sense that the characters are very surface level. And the way they think isn't realistic. Wanted to enjoy but couldn't get further than the first few chapters.

Has promise but no depth

I really enjoyed this story. Relatable on many levels, geographically as well as the personalities covered. Typical small town. Solid narration.

Tied together nicely

Great Australian story, always enjoy a local tale! well written, captivating and interesting.
if i ever wrote an autobiography, I'd love Sybila Bud to narrate for me. I think she could make my dark story sound cheerful!

Narration was outstanding!

Margaret Hickey has done it again. Loved every moment of this book and especially the new characters and landscape. I hope there's more to come!

A brilliant thriller

A diverting read and kept you guessing well enough. Always lovely to have stories set in regions one knows (although I was curious to hear that Edenvale was ‘quiet’ on a Sunday - generally such regional Vic towns’ busiest day!).

It was a bit of a cliche to have the finale enacted where it all began etc but can’t get too picky.

Characters generally well drawn, though the whole Laura red herring was a bit thin.

Sybilla Budd gave a good performance, very easy to listen to - except perhaps her pronunciation of ‘Bill’ - I’m assuming that’s what she was saying. Mangled into something approximating ‘Beeyel’.

But all enjoyable.

Enjoyable - kept the interest up

Kept me guessing right to the end! Loved Sally and with her past / family it added some depth and dimension to her as a character - I feel like there’s a lot more to come with Sally! Highly recommend!

Such an enjoyable read! Kept me guessing!
