Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day and then ages out. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable.

Over the years, as he has thought deeply about where creativity comes from and where it doesn't, he has learned that being an artist isn't about your specific output; it's about your relationship to the world. Creativity has a place in everyone's life, and everyone can make that place larger. In fact, there are few more important responsibilities.

The Creative Act is a beautiful and generous course of study that illuminates the path of the artist as a road we all can follow. It distils the wisdom gleaned from a lifetime's work into a luminous reading experience that puts the power to create moments - and lifetimes - of exhilaration and transcendence within closer reach for all of us.

Critic Reviews

"You'll probably read this extraordinary book four times. The first time, you'll gobble it up. The second time, you'll savour it. The third time, you'll take notes in the margins. But the fourth time, the fourth time it will be part of you as you create the work you were ready to ship." (Seth Godin)

Rick Rubin, the creative Sheppard the world needs

I am an artist.
My desire and pain are known intimately by Rick Rubin.
This book is up there with the art of war and the meditations (Marcus Aurelius), it's a true classic that will be relevant in 1000 years from now.

Thank you for this gem, I hope the day comes where I can physically share my gratitude with you in person.

A breathtaking journey

Rick Rubin’s perspective on what creativity means to him will take you an incredible journey to try and understand why we, as humans, are born to be in service of art, and more importantly how to tap into this innate purpose.

I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Felt like it was written specifically for me

Beyond just a good read! Every sentence feels considered and thought through. I picked up this book as I consider myself a creative, but the teachings and ideas in this book are just a beautiful guide on how to live and be. I rarely re-read books, but keep going back to different chapters and get something new out of it every time. Amazing.

Consumable Wisdom

Rick Rubin expresses his ideas through his book in very consumable form, allowing the reader to take in every aspect with meaning.

As a manager, musician and builder of working artist solutions, this book has become an essential guide for us in helping shape our work in the most efficient way.

Highly recommend for all artists, creatives and collaborators.

A look at self

Smart and deep thinking man who has a great outlook on life. Really like some of the aspects which seem to be obvious until he explains why they happen!

Every word you didn't know how to say.

every moment of this book was a helpful positive and affirming voice that pushes the motivation of an artist towards motivation. it's healthy, harmless and now critical to my role in music.
