Publisher's Summary

Two women. An office filled with secrets. One terrible crime that can't be taken back.

Dawn Schiff is strange.

At least, everyone thinks so at Vixed, the nutritional supplement company where Dawn works as an accountant. She never says the right thing. She has no friends. And she is always at her desk at precisely 8:45 a.m.

So when Dawn doesn't show up to the office one morning, her coworker Natalie Farrell―beautiful, popular, top sales rep five years running―is surprised. Then she receives an unsettling, anonymous phone call that changes everything… It turns out Dawn wasn't just an awkward outsider―she was being targeted by someone close. And now Natalie is irrevocably tied to Dawn as she finds herself caught in a twisted game of cat and mouse that leaves her wondering: who's the real victim?

But one thing is incredibly clear: somebody hated Dawn Schiff.

Enough to kill.

The Coworker is a tense, unputdownable thriller from New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden that explores the dark ways the past can echo through the present―with deadly consequences.

Great twist

You can never tell how Freida’s stories are going to end. This one was gripping and touched my heart at the same time. Highly recommended! Thank you Freida McFadden. Loved it.

Another great read from Freida McFadden

A little slow at the start but boy does this read get better and better the more you listen. Like a slow burn 🔥 to a large flame this story builds with a surprise ending.

Side note: 📝 Love the voice narrator. The combination of Freida’s writing with the amazing voice work by Alyson Krawchuk is so addictively good! I love this narrators work as much as the authors. This duo is so good together!

Swing and a miss

I usually love Frieda McFadden books but this one did not meet my expectations.

Not a single likeable character, the story was so far fetched, and the narrator was dull, unemotive, and grating.

Far fetched

Frieda McFadden novels can be a bit of a hit and miss. The good ones are really good and the others are average at best. I don't have high expectations for this reason. This story was pretty average and silly. While the suspense was good and engaging early on, Part 2 was so cringe and over the top. The ending was so far fetched and unbelievable.
Alyson Krawchuk has a beautiful, playful voice but I don't enjoy her reading of adult thriller novels. She seems to try too hard and fails to deliver any thrill or suspense, and sounds like she'd be better off reading small children or young adult novels. It's a bit of a buzz kill when you're trying to listen to a "psychological thriller"

Not my favourite Freida McFadden

I found the delivery/reading of the emails in the book cringe worthy and the story and ending weren’t really believable at all. I love Frieda’s books but this wasn’t a favourite I’m afraid.

Turtle lovers only

The character Dawn is a totally unlikeable turtle-loving weirdo idiot.
Narrator is awful. Sounds like an AI chatbot or a person who just learned English emphasizing her t’s and d’s in words. It’s so annoying.

“Mia”? Please. I figured that one out within the first few chapters.

The whole book is awful and pointless unless you like hearing a turtle lover talk about her love for turtles and whine about how nobody likes her. If you played a drinking game to take a shot every time someone said the word turtle, you’d be completely wasted by chapter one’s end.

Multiple mispronunciation of words. Vehemently is not pronounced vem-en-tly.

I have liked every other book by this author so I took a shot and pre-ordered it. I’ll never again pre-order a book by this author, and will wait to see the reviews before ordering anything from Freda McFadden again.

Sincerely (say it really fast), Dawn Schiff.

My least favorite

I love Freida’s books and I was excited when this one came out. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into this one. I kept restarting it and trying again. Finally, I just accepted that this one was not going to grab my attention and I pushed through to the end. I wish I had my credit back from this one.

Horrible Boston Accent!

Please, I beg narrators not to attempt Boston accents. I live in the area and I have never met a single person who speaks like a thug with a speech impediment! My own family members have Boston accents. There are words where you don’t pronounce the R’s and words that you do. She had it ALL wrong! Plus, they’re not all gangster sounding!

As for the story, it was okay. Just okay. The characters were all weird, nobody that the listener/reader could really relate to.

This story just didn’t work for me. I’ll give the author another chance because I see the potential. Just not this one.

BTW, in Chapter 26, there is a glaring error. The angry customer who wanted a refund for the bad supplements he purchased complained about THREE boxes he couldn’t use, followed by TWO boxes he wouldn’t get a credit for. Editing and details matter!

Just ok

I usually get sucked into her books from the first page. This one drew me in then lost me a few times. I still finished it in two days. I had a love-hate relationship for Natalie. I had many different ideas about what actually happened. I definitely did not put the pieces together on my own..
The narrator was good, the only part that annoyed me was the reading of the emails. I understand it was how it was written in the book but it just irritated me. 🤣
Overall, it was a decent talk. Not my favorite, but definitely not the worst.

Narrator!!!!! Why?!?!? Nigh unlistenable

I really don’t want to be mean. I really don’t. But go ahead and call me a bully. Because it feels like I’m complaining about how awful a sweet kindergarten teacher is…. Or an adorable Jim Hensen muppet named Twiggles.
But seriously. When I heard the voice of the narrator, that gifmoji of Michael Scott screaming, “No, God, no!” immediately popped into my head. This was followed by my brain screaming, “NOOOOOOO. WHY?!?! WHYYYYYYY???”
I have listened to another Freida McFadden book narrated by her and suffered through it bc I’m such a huge fan of the author. But I don’t know if I can do it this time. Also. I can hear background noises. So this time around, it’s like being read a murder mystery by a kindergarten teacher or Twiggles *over the phone.*
I am sure this narrator is a lovely person. But this is not the genre for her to read. She is my personal Toby. Go back to the annex!
I’m going to try to finish. Everyone wish me luck because I’m sure the story is as fun as McFadden’s other books.
Update: Dawn is autistic, not the Cookie Monster. Lauren Ambrose would have been the perfect narrator for The Coworker.

Typically a Frieda fan but….

This book was awful. From the plot to the narrator it just wasn’t good. Don’t waste your time on this book…check out her others which are much better.

Not the housemaid

It took a while to get into, and at times I thought the treatment of the main character was horrible. It did seem like Natalie was trying to kind, but really just didn’t have it in her in so many ways. My main complaint was that Natalie and Dawn started to sound a lot alike towards end. Was curious is the narrator pronounced A as long sound in purpose to reflect character, or not. Otherwise it really distracted me.

Save your credit

The writing is ok but the story is so contrived and ridiculous. Until I got used to it and put it into context with the character, the narration of Dawn made me want to gag or smash my phone. The good news is that I was able to multitask without fear of missing part of the story.

Freida never disappoints

To: Dearest Readers
From: Freida Stan 15973

Re: The Coworker

There’s something awe inspiring in Freida McFadden’s ability to make you feel some way about a character and then to completely change how you feel about that character, only to do that again before it’s all over. And she does it time and time again.

This book elicited visceral reactions from me on the very first page. I was sure I felt some kind of way.

What’s going on? What’s Dawn’s deal? Wait, what happened to Dawn? Can anyone be trusted?

The bigger twist, for me, was not at the end, but right in the middle of the book. And once it grabbed ahold of me, I had to plow through to the end.

I don’t often read a book in a day, but Freida refused to let me put it down.

This book drones on FOREVER.

If you don't like turtles, avoid.
If you don't like bad narration, avoid.
If you love Freida McFadden, wait for the next one, so avoid.
The plot is weak. Therefore you don't invest in the characters.

A shame as I usually enjoy McFadden's work.

Twisty mystery

I had misgivings about this book as I found Dawn's emails annoying. However, after a couple of chapters I understood her character and it became quite funny. I very much enjoyed this story and the characters. The narration captures the characters very well, the only criticism is for those emails reads. overall would 100% recommend. If you like this you'll probably also like the housemaid and the maid!

Not her best...

I love Freida's work, but this one...it just didn't do it for me. Maybe because none of the characters were likeable enough to care about? I still finished it and will move on to other Freida books but this one is far from her strongest. Usually I can't get enough of the story, this time I was done caring before we even hit the middle. I really do blame the characters because it's the type of story I can totally get behind, a bit predictable but enjoyable.

Disappointing

Not sure if it was the story itself or the narration but as a big fan of Freida’s books I was sorely disappointed. The narrators voice really grated me as did the robotic way she narrated Dawn. The email format of large parts of the story would have been quite inoffensive in book format but in audio it burst my head. Do not recommend.

First EVER book i gave up on!

Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE Freida McFadden and have read EVERYTHING this has published - so was hugely eager to get my ears into this one…

Sadly I was driven insane by the sheer amount of emails going back and forth in this novel - so much so I totally lost interest in the plot and characters.. I just wanted it to end! So I gave up. I’ll be back tho Freida as I’ve loved everything else!

Fast-paced, jaw-dropping twists

As one of the huge fans of Freida, we know that when you think you can guess what’s going to happen next, then you are definitely wrong…(don’t fall into this Frieda’s trap…)

The Coworker is full of jaw-dropping twists. A fast-paced thriller without giving the readers a second to breathe. Typical Freida’s style which I enjoy enormously.

Two women with two secrets. Enough to put them in danger.

Natalie who’s beautiful and everyone’s friend. Her coworker Dawn who’s weird and without friend at the office. She obsessed with turtle…
Dawn had a routine. She arrived to the office at the same time everyday, 60 seconds plus or minus. One day Dawn wasn’t at her seat and Natalie received a phone call by Dawn…”Help Me”.

A body was found. That’s Dawn…? Natalie was innocent but all the evidence was pointing to her. She put herself into a more suspicious position by giving a pseudo alibi…

I read The Coworker in audiobook format. It’s narrated by Alyson Krawchuk. All the characters had different personalities which presented perfectly by Alyson. The nerdy weird Dawn, the innocent but nosy Natalie, the loaded married boss and the good boyfriend…the characters were all played very well.

The Coworker has been prepared for 20 years by Freida. I can’t wait to read her next book - The Teacher.
