Publisher's Summary

A pirate doesn't ask for permission - he takes.

When I see the delicate human female collared and enslaved by the smuggler I'm about to swindle, I do what any male would do. I take her from him. It's what I do best, after all.

Now Fran's mine, and I'm never giving her up. On board my spaceship, she'll be safe. She'll wear my clothes, eat my food, and sleep in my bed. I'll keep her safe from a galaxy that wishes her harm. But my sweet Fran wants nothing more than to return to Earth. How can I take her home when she holds my heart in her dainty, five-fingered hands?

Contains mature themes.

Cute and sassy!

It was so cute. Pretty disappointed that Prison Planet Barbarian didn't come out first. It's the one that turned me into a Ruby Dixon fan. I love that Fran was debated by life events, but still had fight left in her. I loved that Kivian couldn't stand how inhumane she was treated. Still waiting for Prison Planet Barbarian.

Watching Slow Bantering Dating on a Space Ship

So I want to start by saying that I am on the third volume in Ruby Dixon's other series Fireblood Dragon and really enjoy them. For this reason I thought I would explore her other series and this had gotten excellent ratings and had less volumes then some of her others. However this really was not for me. One things was the narration which felt really hokey. Clearly this story has much more interjection of humor and snarky bantering but the male voice in particular maintains that tone of cheesy, I'm wagging finger gun hands at you and winking throughout the entire book even while he is saying things that are meant to be serious and filled with longing. It really made the story fall flat for me. Ruby clearly has a very consistent theme in her books. Creatures that feel very possessive of their female mate, are constantly aroused by this female, are focused only on their pleasure, and only want to engage with this female when that woman is totally consenting and completely enjoying. Oh and with the possessiveness comes a desire to have the woman get pregnant with their child. While this is developed in the Dragon series slowly and with a larger context of a larger world and with characters that have significant depth, in this story it felt formulaic and almost fake. I really didn't believe the feeling the characters were purporting and again the narration didn't help. Also the vast majority of the book was just listening to slightly flirty banter between the two characters with the sexy business not happening until the second to last chapter with 28 minutes left. And again listening to the male voice with a comical tone and bouncing lilt talk about his desire for the female's body just felt odd and almost laughable how incongruent it felt. I guess just wanting the voice to express the possessiveness it proclaims instead of discussing this material with the feel of someone beginning a joke, "Have you heard the one about..." Overall I can't really recommend this, but understand if someone enjoys a lighter less character driven more comedic story this totally might be your jam, but I will not be continuing in the series though I will continue with Ruby Dixon's other series.

Great introduction to a new series!

I really liked this story. It's very entertaining. The characters are interesting and relatable. There are a lot of feels. Kivian is a pirate and pirates don’t ask for permission, they take what they want. He sees a human female being kept as a pet by a smuggler he was meeting and decides that he should take her as well as the cargo he came for. Kivian never thought that he'd be drawn to a human but know that he has Fran, he's going to keep her. He will keep her safe. He just has to get her to agree to stay with him instead of wanting to go home to Earth. Kivian CRACKS ME UP! There is just something about how irreverent he is and flirty and yet all alpha as well. Fran is snarky and sassy and is a perfect match for Kivian. I liked that their relationship built up over time and they spent that time getting to know each other. The crew laughing at Kivian and Fran trying to figure out their feelings was funny too. I loved their happy ever after. I definitely recommend reading this book! Or listening to it! I own the ebook and I purchased the audible book as well!

I needed more.

This story is the first of a series of stand-alones but they flow as a connected series. They are enjoyed best read in order if you can, but it’s not essential. Just be warned, this story is novella length and you should keep that in mind for your budget. I loved the world building for this new-to-me series. The hero Kivian is cocky and smooth talking – to me his alien charm is Han Solo-ish; and the human slave Fran he rescues is resilient, open to ideas and his ideal partner. I enjoyed their chemistry and the initial sexual tension. However, I suddenly came to the end of the story and was surprised it was over. I had anticipated a disappointment leading to conflict and heartbreak as a consequence of an action Kivian took. However, that idea never took off. So for me, the lack of conflict, combined with the very early ending left me feeling the story was incomplete despite the epilogue. That said, I bought the entire series in one go during an Audible sale and have been gradually moving through it. This couple appears in the subsequent instalments as secondary characters and so you can track their happy ever after for longer. Mason Lloyd’s voice is beloved to me now for his work on the ICE PLANET BARBARIAN series. It’s so odd to hear him speaking without an alien barbarian accent in the CORSAIR novels. But he’s such a great talent I am learning to love him in a new context. Holly Jackson is amazing as always. It’s a joy to have narrators I admire to enjoy a whole new series with.

Fun-loving alíen pírate rescues the girl

I love this light hearted book. Space pirate captain Kivian steals a shipment- and a slave. He sets her free and they have pirate adventures. I love jovial Kivian, his teasing ways and charming manner- as well as his fancy shirts! If you’ve ready Dixon’s Ice Planet Barbarian series, you will recognize the Messakah species- giant blue aliens with 3 fingers, horns and a tail.

Amazing Narrators

I have listened to these narrators before in other books. At first my brain wanted me to believe that this was a different book because of the voices. But soon the narrators did their job and pulled me into this story. I loved it and will be listening to the rest of the series soon!

A fun listen

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoy listening to Mason Lloyd. First time with Hollie Jackson and her easy to listen too. Short but sweet
