It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Story
When the end of the world arrived, it came not with a bang, as most expected, but with more of a "pfft" instead. Humanity has been torn asunder and brought to the edge of total annihilation in less than an hour. For those who died, it was a quick death, so fast that their brains didn't have time to process the pain signals from their nerves. For those who survived, the true horror is about to begin as they struggle to not only stay alive, but come to grips with the shocking realization about what - and who - was responsible.

More I read more I was hooked.
After seeing this series promoted on Facebook, I had a listen. This is my first time experiencing McDermotts writing and I can now say I will be back for more.
Many varying characters to love and hate, cheer for and cry with should the events require it.
I appreciated the gritty realness if the situation and the human responses by the differing groups in the story. It helped make the adventure relatable and added realism to the narrative.
Best quote (from memory) - I cant be bought but I can be rented, especially if there is coffee involved.
Best one liners goes to Torres (aka the Magician)
In the end I had to listen at 1.5speed to hear as much as I could each sessions (really highlighted the fight scenes by doing this too)

OUTSTANDING
Great books. I really like how practical and realistic these books are. it will open your eyes as far as being prepared. I have been a prepper/ survivalist for many years. my eyes where opened after my service in the Marines. I saw many countries and thanked God I was born in America. I also learned just how vulnerable we are in our country.

Good Story, Okay Writing, Lackluster Performance
The overall story was well thought out and the wrap up of the trilogy shows that as all the pieces fall into place. It's clear that McDermott knows his way around ships and boats and all manner of water vessel.
Some of the side characters were written a bit too stereotypical, however. My confidence in the story faded whenever those characters where on the page. Much as it did every time someone survived a situation of otherwise certain doom. This tale seems to follow the luckiest people in the whole event. After a while, it became a bit boring as they narrowly escaped time and again, due either to their enemies' incompetence, a cunning and convenient advantage, or just plain luck.
The performance, unfortunately, just didn't cut it for me. No doubt, Kevin Pierce is excellent for certain books, but he seems to lack the range to bring a story with this many characters to life without them all sounding the same. His easy southern drawl felt particularly out of place while reading for characters from New England and his delivery with some of the aforementioned stereotypical side characters felt quite uncomfortable, not due to what he had to say, but in the way he said it.
As a whole, I enjoyed the story and found it to be an interesting topic that I don't see touched on very often. the realism and attention to detail for certain thing the author clearly knows well was refreshing, but some of the characters and events felt flat and uninspired and the performance regularly drew me out of the story.

Humans can be real pigs
I found it difficult to keep the many characters straight, but enjoyed the whole trilogy completely. In just days, half of humanity loses its civilization, reverting to our basest, most horrible possible selves. The other half maintain themselves and seek to protect and defend.
The story tells of varied groups of people and their struggles after the loss of all power across the USA. Their losses and successes are realistic and very very human. Gotta love those Cajuns.
Kevin Pierce has a great voice, but not all the characters are distinguishably different. Nevertheless, it was pleasant to listen to, and captivating to "read."

Same thing over and over and over and over....
If you like 30 hours of very similar southern flavored pseudo military type encounters with a sprinkling of machismo and a dab of rape this is your book.
If you like well developed characters, good dialog, and an interesting plot stay far far away from this book.

Disruption Trilogy
The world is hit by solar flares - disrupting power grids across the world. This story is primarily in the USA. There are opportunistic Presidents, who care nothing about this country, citizens, anything but power - you don't need to stretch your imagination with this portrayal - think Trump. A good-guy Cabinet member who is on the run. A couple of good guy military men trying to protect the nation, and a slew of grizzly jerks that are trying to destroy it all in order to protect themselves.
It's an apocalypse story with all the ramifications. Low supplies, bad people, good people. Bad guys are militia preppers, bikers, escaped prisoners. Good guys are that portion of our military and government that haven't been corrupted. These stories will always disappoint with regard to the nature of man. Within a few days, we're killing each other - doesn't say much for Americans. But, given what is going on in this country, armed militias, and the visceral hate of our fellow Americans because of a political bent, maybe it's spot on. Ultimately, all but about 30 million of us die - the story doesn't say much about the rest of the world. Amazing that man will turn so evil in so short a time. Within days, women are raped, children killed, all for what may be in their pantry.
Narration is slow - bumped the reading up to 1.4 on the iPhone, but not distracting from the story - so okay.
Recommended for those interested in apocalypse aftermath. No sex, some offensive language - but realistic.
The ending of this long saga is the voice of the author - asking for an Audible review. Here 'ya go R.E. McDermott!

My first, but not my last McDermott
I got the audible trilogy at a special rate, hoping it would be good enough to help pass some time at work. Being narrated by Kevin Pierce was a huge incentive. WOW! What a thrilling story it was. I found myself pleading for the survival of some characters and the slow painful demise of others. In the end... well, you will have to find out for yourself.

Sounds familiar
I’ve only listened to the first book so far, I bought it based on the reviews... it might be a decent story but for me it’s the same old generic American “prepper” and the downfall of American society! Well I’m glad I don’t live there because every post apocalyptic book seems to have the entire social structure and law enforcement collapse within 3 days of losing power! With “gang bangers” or lunatics taking over within a week!!! Couldn’t listen to any more! In the U.K. if we lost power for 3 days we’d be complaining that the weather was aggravating the issue, our fish fingers defrosted and are no good and having to boil water for tea on the hob instead of the kettle! I doubt anyone would rape pillage and murder for some canned fruit! And why as a reader, would I care about the ins and outs of a fart of some gun with stupid numbers and unbelievable technical specifications of weapons that mean nothing to anyone but a gun shop owner? We don’t care just say he had a gun or he had a big gun! Yes you may pick up I’m a bit peeved... spent hours picking a book listened to 15 hours only to find its almost identical to “the day after” and various other generic American hero prepper saves the world story. If you’re after something different, with some originality try peter clines the fold or 14. Dark matter is a good shout too, even wayward pines or extraction at least have some original ideas. Rant over
If you’ve never listened to a post apocalyptic downfall of American society in an incredibly short time with a prepper generic hero who saves the day, before, you might enjoy this as a first! Can’t fault the narrator though

Wow!
I dont normally read this kind of book, I'm more a crime/thriller kinda girl! But this was on deal and offered 30+ hours of listening time for 1 credit and I love a bargain! I've also got a lot of time to fill whilst being on lockdown because of the CV-19. I've gotta say, this book had me gripped!! I thought this book/series would give me at least a 14+ days of listening time! Nope! books done and dusted in under a week! I literally could not stop listening and lay in bed at night carrying on the tale well past midnight, resetting the sleep timer several times, sounding like my teenagers being told to 'get off the video games' with promises to go to sleep in 'just 10 more minutes!' lol The characters are well rounded and their personalities are relatable. Although I do agree with some other 'English reviews', the time scales things go to a complete 'sh!t show' are a little unrealistic, (over here, we'd probably make a cuppa tea and think about stuff or panic buy toilet paper for the first month at least!) it's essentially a tale you can get lost in and the timescale thing doesnt detract anything from the story. It's not often a book can make me laugh out loud, cry and cheer on the characters in equal measures! This one did it all! I'm actually sad to say good bye to the characters I've come to know! Living in a world ourselves, that in 3 short months, is far different to what we have previously taken for granted, I could far better understand and empathise the difficulties a major incident would impact everyone! This would make an awesome film! love love loved it!!

Hours of entertainment
Exciting and well thought out story, well read by the narrator. Really makes you consider what could happen in such scenarios.

Great story, full of action and well narrated
An engrossing story, with a good number of threads (but not to many), that delivers a thought provoking post civilisation world with loads of action, several and many styles of bad guys and a bucket load of ordinary folk turned heroes who oppose them. 39 hours of really good narration and it just sweeps past. If you like post apocalypse / dystopian future storyline then this is for you.

Not that grrat
Boring, forgettable, predictable. 3 words I feel best suit these series.
Every bad guy is a rapist, every woman is suddenly a crack shot with a rifle, with most of them having a hot body to match.
Nearly every gun fight has the terms muzzle flash or gun barks.
Can be confusing what group is being spoke about but I feel thats more the narrators fault.
