No one has ever ventured deeper into space than the four astronauts of Shepherd-1. The aim of their mission is to witness the creation of the cosmos. Using the sun as a lens, they are to align a flock of probes in such a way that the moment of the Big Bang becomes visible. For astronomer Christine, this is a dream come true. So she is bitterly disappointed when the first images are obscured by a kind of veil that prevents any insight. The Alt Apocalypse is the ground-breaking, genre-bending series from Tom Abrahams. It explores survival under the most extreme circumstances, but with a twist (and no cliff-hangers). More I read more I was hooked.
After seeing this series promoted on Facebook, I had a listen. This is my first time experiencing McDermotts writing and I can now say I will be back for more.
Many varying characters to love and hate, cheer for and cry with should the events require it.
I appreciated the gritty realness if the situation and the human responses by the differing groups in the story. It helped make the adventure relatable and added realism to the narrative.
Best quote (from memory) - I cant be bought but I can be rented, especially if there is coffee involved.
Best one liners goes to Torres (aka the Magician)
In the end I had to listen at 1.5speed to hear as much as I could each sessions (really highlighted the fight scenes by doing this too)

Solid. Worth Reading
Whilst it had a number of right wing tropes, and was a little unimaginative at times, the detail was excellent and so was the action.
Few issues: how a thousand neo-Nazis managed to share one prison is beyond me. Most US prisoners are black.
We never returned to one of the main early characters. Never got resolution on several loose ends and characters.
Sometimes the detail seemed to overtake the action.
Author is obsessed with "M4s" and "Barretts" and M2 Brownings. Like hardly any other weapon existing in the US.
Fine if you like the genre.

OUTSTANDING
Great books. I really like how practical and realistic these books are. it will open your eyes as far as being prepared. I have been a prepper/ survivalist for many years. my eyes where opened after my service in the Marines. I saw many countries and thanked God I was born in America. I also learned just how vulnerable we are in our country.

Surprisingly great listen.
While one is definitely able to nitpick certain details as impossible. the plot, the characters, and the narrator all worked well together to suspend reality creating a great story of fiction. Extra credits site audibledealsdutcom. Thank you Mr McDermott for such a wonderful book! While some parts left me devastated the overall story was wonderful! I will be looking for more of his books! Good story, plausible and very enjoyable. I looked forward to my long commute with this series.

Same thing over and over and over and over....
If you like 30 hours of very similar southern flavored pseudo military type encounters with a sprinkling of machismo and a dab of rape this is your book.
If you like well developed characters, good dialog, and an interesting plot stay far far away from this book.

Battle skirmishes and not much else
I'm a sucker for really long books and this one was recommended by a few reviewers who liked Commune which I did as well (despite its tendency to veer into being a gun manual for the post apocalypse). But this book is just a relentless series of battle manuvers and preparation for more battles between good guys and bad guys. There is no character development beyond stereotyping of said good guys and bad guys (good guys have families they care about, bad guys are stupid and have zero morals). Also there are very few female characters written in at all which for me is a major shortcoming.
I am much more interested in stories of how people would live and survive in a post apocalyptic world than how they are going to fight with each other. I listened far too long waiting for something interesting to develop, or even just a character I could care about to emerge. I finally realized it's not going to happen. I'll be returning this one.

Humans can be real pigs
I found it difficult to keep the many characters straight, but enjoyed the whole trilogy completely. In just days, half of humanity loses its civilization, reverting to our basest, most horrible possible selves. The other half maintain themselves and seek to protect and defend.
The story tells of varied groups of people and their struggles after the loss of all power across the USA. Their losses and successes are realistic and very very human. Gotta love those Cajuns.
Kevin Pierce has a great voice, but not all the characters are distinguishably different. Nevertheless, it was pleasant to listen to, and captivating to "read."

Good Story, Okay Writing, Lackluster Performance
The overall story was well thought out and the wrap up of the trilogy shows that as all the pieces fall into place. It's clear that McDermott knows his way around ships and boats and all manner of water vessel.
Some of the side characters were written a bit too stereotypical, however. My confidence in the story faded whenever those characters where on the page. Much as it did every time someone survived a situation of otherwise certain doom. This tale seems to follow the luckiest people in the whole event. After a while, it became a bit boring as they narrowly escaped time and again, due either to their enemies' incompetence, a cunning and convenient advantage, or just plain luck.
The performance, unfortunately, just didn't cut it for me. No doubt, Kevin Pierce is excellent for certain books, but he seems to lack the range to bring a story with this many characters to life without them all sounding the same. His easy southern drawl felt particularly out of place while reading for characters from New England and his delivery with some of the aforementioned stereotypical side characters felt quite uncomfortable, not due to what he had to say, but in the way he said it.
As a whole, I enjoyed the story and found it to be an interesting topic that I don't see touched on very often. the realism and attention to detail for certain thing the author clearly knows well was refreshing, but some of the characters and events felt flat and uninspired and the performance regularly drew me out of the story.

Half good half lacking
There are parts of this story that are decent. I REALLY could have done without the Arian Nation and black Gang storylines. They simply were not feasible to me. I also tired very quickly of the language. Despite the language being used within a story line for which one would expect it, it just came off as over used, repetitive, and ridiculously exaggerated. I also don’t believe either’s miscreant group’s leaders would be able to pull off the leadership and organization in the story. They’d all kill each other off within their own groups way before organizing to the extent this book attempted to portray. Character development was weak in my opinion, although I like how the mother of Jeremy was so bad ass, and Jeremy himself was a great character to add to the story. I kind of liked the Cajun army thing too. Maybe that was it, there was just too much going on, not enough character development /or lack of substory behind the characters. I get it all tied together in the end. Not a bad book, just not one of my favs.

My first, but not my last McDermott
I got the audible trilogy at a special rate, hoping it would be good enough to help pass some time at work. Being narrated by Kevin Pierce was a huge incentive. WOW! What a thrilling story it was. I found myself pleading for the survival of some characters and the slow painful demise of others. In the end... well, you will have to find out for yourself.

Sounds familiar
I’ve only listened to the first book so far, I bought it based on the reviews... it might be a decent story but for me it’s the same old generic American “prepper” and the downfall of American society! Well I’m glad I don’t live there because every post apocalyptic book seems to have the entire social structure and law enforcement collapse within 3 days of losing power! With “gang bangers” or lunatics taking over within a week!!! Couldn’t listen to any more! In the U.K. if we lost power for 3 days we’d be complaining that the weather was aggravating the issue, our fish fingers defrosted and are no good and having to boil water for tea on the hob instead of the kettle! I doubt anyone would rape pillage and murder for some canned fruit! And why as a reader, would I care about the ins and outs of a fart of some gun with stupid numbers and unbelievable technical specifications of weapons that mean nothing to anyone but a gun shop owner? We don’t care just say he had a gun or he had a big gun! Yes you may pick up I’m a bit peeved... spent hours picking a book listened to 15 hours only to find its almost identical to “the day after” and various other generic American hero prepper saves the world story. If you’re after something different, with some originality try peter clines the fold or 14. Dark matter is a good shout too, even wayward pines or extraction at least have some original ideas. Rant over
If you’ve never listened to a post apocalyptic downfall of American society in an incredibly short time with a prepper generic hero who saves the day, before, you might enjoy this as a first! Can’t fault the narrator though

Don't know where I review went but.....
This is the second time I've listened to this series! It's worth the credit and every hours spent listening! I don't normally listen/read to this genre of book but this one is amazing! I first listened during lockdown and it kept me company on the many hours I spent shielding! I've just recently finished reading it again and it honest just gets better! The characters are believable and relatable, really well thought out and the descriptive writing puts you right there in the scene! It's one of the books that just keeps you turning 'just one more page' Read it! you won't regret it!

Hours of entertainment
Exciting and well thought out story, well read by the narrator. Really makes you consider what could happen in such scenarios.

Time flew by with compelling themes
Honestly, was just looking for a long listen to help me while away the hours exercising… It definitely filled that space very well, with an enjoyable story that made time fly by.

Misogyny at its worst
There is one species on earth and that is the male supremo. Women are either pretty, whores, petite or an aberration. What a load of male muscle flexing fantasy. The author clearly lives in a fantasy land of Saint Sinner, Virgin Whore where both polemics need to raped, mocked and silenced.

Oh come on!
Sorry I tried but his BS typical red neck crap just dis not become anything else than a promoter of "usa survivor"!story. It made me very sick with the, what could be real, attitude ( in only 7days)'. Shitty stroy that just did not get better.
A Really old typisk BS story, that makes for a really Fucked up read/ listen.

So realistically written
Very good story from start to finish.
Certainly opens ones eyes to the affects & aftermath of human nature once a solar storm has hit.

What a find!!!
From start to finish, an absolute stonker of a series. With just the tiniest stretches of imagination, this 3 book series was tremndously engaging and entertaining from the get-go. It's rare that I'll listen to a trilogy without at least one stage, wondering if the author would get to the point. That never happened, incredibly well written. While you're listening and enjoying the narrative of one group, part of you immediately wants to know what's happening elsewhere. The narrator really delivers the suspense, build-up, and action sequences masterfully, pulling on heart strings as he goes. Thoroughly recommend this book.
