**A Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller, Sept 2023**

**SHORTLISTED FOR THE FT BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023**

AI. SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY. QUANTUM COMPUTING. Everything is about to change. This is the only book you need to understand this new world.

From the ultimate AI insider, Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, part of Google.

Soon you will live surrounded by AIs. They will organise your life, operate your business, and run core government services. You will live in a world of DNA printers and quantum computers, engineered pathogens and autonomous weapons, robot assistants and abundant energy.

None of us are prepared.

As co-founder of the pioneering AI company DeepMind, part of Google, Mustafa Suleyman has been at the centre of this revolution. The coming decade, he argues, will be defined by this wave of powerful, fast-proliferating new technologies.

In The Coming Wave, Suleyman shows how these forces will create immense prosperity but also threaten the nation-state, the foundation of global order. As our fragile governments sleepwalk into disaster, we face an existential dilemma: unprecedented harms on one side and the threat of overbearing surveillance on the other.

Can we forge a narrow path between catastrophe and dystopia?

This ground-breaking book from the ultimate AI insider establishes 'the containment problem' - the task of maintaining control over powerful technologies - as the essential challenge of our age.

Not for the feint of heart!!

Equally inspiring and terrifying. On the one hand AI sounds like the answer to all the worlds problems, and on the other hand, a totalitarian dystopian surely awaits. Suleyman is not afraid to lay out all the possibilities of the coming wave (that can sometimes read as a playbook for ‘bad actors’ to use the technologies against the masses). It’s a lot to take in. I am listening out of a sense of duty as I think it’s better to know what’s coming, but if you’re already anxious about the future, listen with care!

Necessary reading

I bought copies of this for the teenagers in my life and am recommending it to everyone. If you want to start preparing for the near future, which will look very different from today, then read this book to help prepare, plan, and seize the opportunities.

The size of the challenges ahead.

This was a great book to read. Very well written and narrated. It is very informative about how the future will unfold over the next decade. It’s topical relevance and timing is self-evident.

It's actually a Tsunami that is coming.

Very interesting topic. Worth listening to. Mentions a lot of parallels, however, the power of this wave has no parallel.

Mandatory

Should be on the non-optional list of those training their brain on the implications and management of AI (and Quantum Computing and Synthetic Biology) for humanity

Want to know the road ahead..... must read!

The most detailed and informed assessment of all the possibilities of the future of humanity. The emergence of AI, robotics and synthetic life, has the potential of utopia and distopia. Knowing the wave that is coming has helped me be awake, and hopefully prepared, for all the possibilites.
