About this listen

From the No.1 bestselling author, comes an exciting novel new to Hodder in eBook and audio.

On an island off the coast of Maine, a man is found dead. There's no identification on the body. Only the dogged work of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues.

But that's just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...?

No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world's great storytellers presents a surprising tale that explores the nature of mystery itself....

This was a nice, low-key, gentle mystery novella. Slight horror, but a wonderful little story. This, at least to me, wasn’t about the dead body and how gruesome it could have been, but taking someone young and eager into the fold (provided they were sharp enough.) This is more a “coming-of-age” tale and the old passing onto the young the ring of history.

This book, and the narration, is calming and soothing; almost as though you could be sitting in the same location and experience it yourself without having to think too hard.

It’s a nice breakaway from King’s usual tension that goes on an entire novel. It might be a novella, but there’s an interesting amount to unpack.

I’d suggest this to people who are just starting to dabble in King’s way of writing and go on their own literary journey of his works from there.

My least favourite of Kings stories. Left feeling like I wasted my time listening to it. A bit like old men ramblings
