Good start that peters out to same old ending

I bought this book as I thought the angle of a father suspecting a psycho son in law was an original viewpoint, and one that the author could have fun making humorous as well as menacing. I looked forward to cringing and awkward funny situations as well as dark ones, but no, nothing like that. The SIL, Ryan, apart from one or two cold stares, is no where near menacing enough. there shouldve been so many opportunities for double speak and threatening entendre, but none taken up. what about descriptions of excruciating family meals and celebrations ? Yet when it comes to body count, Ryan is actually cavalier to the point of farce. The dad, Ed is better drawn, we feel for him, the wife and daughter are generic. The story cracked along at a good pace, with plenty of cliffhangers and exciting ‘nearly caught out’ moments. but ultimately the interesting elements like why is ryan like this ? can ryan change ? what secrets might Ed have himself ? are never explored. Also there also isn’t nearly enough interplay between ed and ryan, a better writer would have made their convos and sub texts edge of seat, but all these two can manage is ‘I dropped some stuff off’, ‘oh ok’ kind of thing. SPOILER ALERT The ending is just a fight. well written but still, just a fight. I think ending a story with a fight is lazy story telling. I need more nuances please, a comment on the human condition, a development, a change. readers are not at saturday morning pictures. I dont feel I can return this book, as I listened in one sitting and it kept me entertained whilst cooking, but ultimately it is, sadly, just one big fat missed opportunity and I felt slightly conned. It just couldve been so much better, with far more chapters, menace, character interplay and backstories.

Cracking Good Psychological Thriller

Not just the story, but writing too is superb. This really had me gripped all though from start to finish. T.M. Logan is a cracking good writer. The premise for the first two thirds of the book is given by the publishers, if I can paraphrase it: "over-protective Dad is suspicious of his daughter's new 'goody-two-shoes' fiancé, and is out to prove that he is right before his daughter lands herself in trouble." Perhaps this part is a bit "linear". I'd have liked a few sub-plots, but despite that I was still 100% engaged and just wanted to keep listening as the characters and their relationships were developed. The final third of the book gets really exciting and is well worth the long build-up. Even as the truth starts to emerge, we still find ourselves swayed one way or the other about who is the good guy, who is the bad guy. Also, as listeners, we come to know that the life of one of the main characters is in peril - will they escape... Great suspense. Set in Nottingham, and the Derbyshire Peak District.

dreary and not very credible

If, faced with an armed psychopath, you would trap yourself in your attic and cower there sobbing loudly, you might enjoy this book.

Terrible narration and poor story

First book I’ve bought by T M Logan; probably the last. At first, I thought poor narration was the issue, so I persevered, but what a waste of time. The narration is strained, at best. Over dramatic and trying to constantly reflect suspense and question. It’s awful. But over and above that, the plot is thin, the characters don’t engender empathy and there’s little or no tension. I’m familiar with the location, but there’s no sense of place other than specific references to suburbs b6 name. Not necessary and add nothing. Dialogue is generally laboured and facile. I liked the premise; the nook doesn’t deliver. I’m going to return it.

Wow! completely immersive listening

So exciting... I found myself actually talking to the characters - don't do that! Remember what he said! He's behind you! Over protective Dad knows to take heed of his gut instinct, but everyone else thinks he's going mad. Even the listener does sometimes - but - well no spoilers. This is excellent value lockdown listening with a narrator who never annoys, gets all the voices right and keeps you on the edge all the time. Wonderful!

Gripping

Great characters and twist in plot. Listening to the book I feel, on this occasion, would be better than reading it. Would definitely recommend.

Excellent!

I love this book. It is enthralling and compelling throughout. I really struggled to put it down. The characters are well drawn and it is extremely well written and researched. None of those moments here when one thinks that something wouldn’t happen the way in which it was written. I will now immediately purchase this author’s other books.
