People and how they operate in extreme conditions, how the navy and people see things in war. The reading is wonderful and the story is hard to stop listening too as it flows so well.

Wonderful WWII novel exploring the Naval institution

There have been advances in novel-writing technique and literary style since Wouk came on the scene. He has always been a competent wordsmith with a nose for a compelling storyline, but this novel would have benefited from a professional editorial haircut and a way better choice of narrator.

An engaging story spoiled by a stilted and disappointingly delivered narrative.
