Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This audiobook in The Thursday Murder Club series is read by a new narrator, Fiona Shaw.

A new mystery is afoot in the third book in the Thursday Murder Club series from record-breaking, bestselling author Richard Osman.

This audiobook includes an exclusive interview between Richard Osman and journalist and TV presenter Steph McGovern.

It is an ordinary Thursday, and things should finally be returning to normal.

Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club are concerned. A local news legend is on the hunt for a sensational headline, and soon the gang are hot on the trail of two murders, ten years apart.

To make matters worse, a new nemesis pays Elizabeth a visit, presenting her with a deadly mission: kill or be killed...

While Elizabeth grapples with her conscience (and a gun), the gang and their unlikely new friends (including TV stars, money launderers and ex-KGB colonels) unravel a new mystery. But can they catch the culprit and save Elizabeth before the murderer strikes again?

Where's Leslie

I am beyond devasted that Leslie Manville is not narrating this 3rd story. It has changed the whole experience for me. I am sure in the discussin at the end of Book 2 we were told Leslie would again narrate the next in the series. Leslie's accents were so fantastic and brought the characters to life for me. I do not recognise Bogdan in this book. I have waiting so long for it and feel so disappointed.

Narration is abysmal. What is it with a whispering voice?

Sorry,

I tried hard, I really did - but the magic is gone without Leslie. I couldn’t finish and only got a few chapters in. The new narrator is great - but just not the same.

Brilliant from Richard Osman- again

This is an intriguing, highly entertaining, witty and clever novel. It’s the best yet in this compelling series with sublime narration from the extraordinary Fiona Shaw. May he never cease writing and may Fiona partner with him indefinitely. Can’t wait till the next instalment. ,

Terrible narration

You should not narrate an audiobook if you can’t read without mumbling and stuttering. Painful to listen to.

The voices don't seem right to me after Leslie's in the 1st 2 books. The accents are just not right for the characters..

Boring, don’t do it!!!

I tried so hard to like this book, I gave it a solid 3 hrs and couldn’t get into it at all. I’m an avid listener and have never given a review, however after seeing all the gushing reviews I had to give another opinion. Narration is so toff, story is difficult to follow and overall it is just so bad that I couldn’t keep punishing my ears.

Shame on you, says Bernard

I would have rated the book five stars if Fiona Shaw had started her narration from the first book. There is no problem with her capability as a narrator, and no problem with the book itself, either.

However, in the universe of audiobooks, the author and the narrator go in tandem. The pairing is unique, especially in a series, and you cannot simply substitute a narrator due to some commercial consideration, e.g., scheduling issues, etc. The act is sacrilege, in my opinion.

When Book 13 of the Dresden Files series came out with a different narrator, I remember there was an uproar of complaints from listeners who insisted that Audible should address the situation by re-recording by James Marsters. Fortunately, Audible accepted the demand, and the incident ended happily.

For this series, Lesley Manville was the voice for the first two installments. Somebody in the business of producing this audiobook series may have thought it was still an early stage of the series, and the substitution would not do much harm. How wrong they were. They should realise this simple fact: audiobooks do not work that way.

As was the case for the Dresden Files series, I hope Audible will honestly act on its principle of "Unleashing The Power of The Spoken Word" by delivering on the expectation of loyal customers.

Great story, wrong step with the change of narrator

It was a really unpleasant surprise to find out that all the characters changed their voices. It’s not the the new narration was bad by itself, but it just didn’t fit. Like changing all actors in the third season of a series…. The book is great. Looking forward to the next one.

Can’t tell if I didn’t like the book as much or if it was just the terrible narration

The last two books in this series have been narrated by Lesley Manville, who was brilliant. For some reason this book was narrated by Fiona Shaw, who was dreadful. Why was she whispering half the time??? Why did all the characters sound exactly the same??? The narration was so bad that it coloured the whole book for me. I couldn’t tell if I didn’t enjoy the book as much or if it was just the narrator ruining it. I sincerely hope they get Lesley Manville back for book 4. If it’s Fiona Shaw again I won’t be buying it.

Breath-y narrator ruins listening experience

Gone straight from the first two books into this one. Can't concentrate on the story because of the weird breathy narrator. Very off-putting in the car.

Abominable Narration!

I had to return the book because I couldn’t bare the way Fiona Shaw was recording this novel. Her voice was so whispery and it was obvious that she hadn’t read the other two books and didn’t fully understand the characters. Why else would she had made the tough, PC Donna sound like a high school cheerleading captain?
Horrid, absolutely horrid. Couldn’t get into it at all. Very bad decision from the production team to change the narrator. It would have been so much better to wait until Lesley could narrate again even if that meant a slight delay in the release of the audiobook. I will have to get this book on my kindle and read it and just hope… oh, just hope that Lesley Manville narrates number 4. For this reason, I won’t be preordering… I need to first be assured that listening to the book will be an enjoyable (and not jarring!) experience.

Disappointing change of narrator

I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series and Leslie Mandeville really inhabited the characters. Funnily enough while as I was listening to her I was imagining Fiona Shaw cast as Elizabeth in the inevitable T.V. Series. I did not, however, appreciate Fiona’s “soto voce” style applied so liberally in this book and kept wishing she would speak normally rather than in a hushed whisper. I stopped listening after the first couple of chapters in order to return it. If it was re-recorded with the original narrator I would re-purchase it like a shot. As it is “The Bullet Missed”.

Fiona Shaw is fabulous

Have not finished the book as it only came out yesterday, however Fiona Shaw does a fantastic job as narrator. If people find her sensitive interpretation of the characters so off putting then perhaps they should read the book. That way they they can have the original narrator’s voices in their heads as they read.

If I could give no stars I would

I couldn't get further than the first few minutes of this. You absolutely cannot get readers invested in characters as voiced by Leslie Manville and then switch to a different narrator who is with respect, no where near as skilled. I will be returning this. So disappointed as I have been eagerly awaiting this third instalment.

Not Lesley?

Bad decision not to wait until Lesley was available to narrate.
I cannot take to the characters new voices, it really distracts me from the story.
It feels as if the 'friends' previously made have gone, to be replaced by poor imitations.
Big disappointment and a real shame as I was really looking forward to this.

Alright we get it people don't like change...

It's great. All the naysayers are just moaning as they don't like change. Fiona is a great actress and by the time you're a few chapters in you'll forget the change. Listen to the story and for goodness sakes until you've published 3 books and had them recorded as audio books just stfu being so negative.

Finding it hard to listen to!

Edit. I had to stop listening and listened to 3 different audio books, so that I could try to forget how wonderfully Lesley Manville narrated the first two. However, I am still really struggling. It isn't just that the characters sound different or that names are pronounced differently, but I really do not like the style of narration. Fiona Shaw has a breathy/reflective style of delivery, especially when not being a character. She also does this when narrating Joyce's diary entries. It all feels so wrong and I struggle to hold concentration. This was never a problem with the first two books. ........ my original thoughts/review follows ........ I was really worried when I heard that Lesley Manville wasn't narrating (despite her telling Richard O that 'you can always make time to do an audio book'). Fiona Shaw doesn't even pronounce Donna's surname properly!!! Lesley Manville was just SO perfect and I am just not enjoying this narration. If I hadn't heard the 1st two book, I may have found this OK, but it just hasn't got the same feel or subtly. I am not far into the story, but I am genuinely finding it hard to listen to, and I haven't smiled once! So disappointed.

Loved it. Just wish I'd not finished it in one day

A new reader was a little disconcerting for the first half hour. Now I can't remember the old one and can't imagine anyone other than Fiona Shaw. Loved this 3rd book, devoured it in one sitting and now feel bereft having to wait an eternity for the next one.
