About this listen

"Walter, you old rascal," chuckled the barista as she placed the steaming cup of black coffee on the counter.

Walter Shively raised an eyebrow, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "I've told you, young lady, it's not polite to call an old man a rascal," he said with a wink, taking the coffee in his weathered hands. The warmth was a comforting contrast to the chill outside, and he took a sip, savoring the bitter taste that brought him back to life every morning.

The barista, barely in her twenties, giggled. She had heard the same line every day for the past two years, but it never failed to brighten her morning. "Well, Mr. Shively," she said playfully, "you do have a way of making the most mundane stories sound like international espionage."

Walter leaned in, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "You wouldn't believe the half of it, my dear." His gaze drifted to the rain-soaked London street beyond the steamed-up window. The bustle of pedestrians and the honking of taxis painted a vivid picture of the life he had left behind. The city was as much a character in his memories as Jacqueline herself.

As he sipped his coffee, he thought back to their clandestine meetings in dimly lit cafes, the scent of her perfume lingering in the air. Her voice had been a siren's call, guiding him through the murky waters of political intrigue and danger. The thrill of their encounters had been intoxicating, a symphony of whispers and stolen glances. Yet, midst the chaos of his double life, Walter had never revealed his true identity to her. It was a dance of deception, performed with the grace of a master spy and the passion of a love-struck poet.

The rain grew heavier, tapping a rhythm against the windowpane that matched the tempo of his racing heart. Walter felt a sudden urge to visit the theater where Jacqueline had once graced the stage. Perhaps her spirit was still there, waiting in the wings, ready to perform for an audience of one.
