Story
Noah is in love with his online best friend. Which is a huge problem, for the following reasons: 1. His crush has no idea. 2. Noah only knows him as his gaming avatar. 3. There's zero chance they'll ever meet in real life. So, when Noah sees an opportunity to secretly meet his crush, he takes it. Even though he'll have to join the cast of a local production of Chicago with his self-obsessed mother. Even though he'll need to lie to his best (and only) friend. And even though he'll have to sing and dance in front of actual people.

Story
Kathy has accidentally continued working at Rocking Donkey Records, an independent record shop in Brisbane, for 15 years. She started there as a total fangirl high schooler, stayed through university, and oops, suddenly 30 is on the horizon and she's still dealing with mansplaining music bros both at and behind the counter, and measuring her self-worth by her knowledge of Nick Cave's back catalogue. When the daily grind of working in the male-dominated record industry gets her down, Kathy finds solace in her two best friends.

Story
Born under different stars, Protestant Mungo and Catholic James live in a hyper-masculine world. They are caught between two of Glasgow’s housing estates where young working-class men divide themselves along sectarian lines, and fight territorial battles for the sake of reputation. They should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all, and yet they become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the doocot that James has built for his prize racing pigeons. As they begin to fall in love, they dream of escaping the grey city.

Story
This is a story about my fourteenth year of life as a gay kid at an all-boys rugby-mad Catholic school in regional Queensland. It was a year in which I started to discover who I was, and deeply hated what was revealed. It was a year in which I had my first crush and first devastating heartbreak. It was a year of torment, bullying and betrayal - not just at the hands of my peers, but by adults who were meant to protect me.

There are plenty of words Jonah Collins could use to describe Dylan Ramírez. 'Arrogant', 'spoiled', and 'golden boy', to name a few. Likewise, Dylan thinks he has Jonah all figured out: an attention-seeking asshat who never shuts his filthy mouth. Their friends are convinced Jonah's and Dylan's disdain for one another is just thinly veiled lust - a rumour that surges like wildfire when the two wake up in the same bed after homecoming...

I’m just not smart enough for this book
- By Viknik on 17-03-2019
Publisher's Summary
Whoever survives the week will never be the same again.
A group of school-leavers: free at last, ready to party, expectations high. A remote island on the Western Australian coast wasn’t exactly the plan, but they’re not going to let that hold them back.
Leonardo, geeky, asthmatic, shy and prone to anxiety, has landed with them. He’s terrified—he’s definitely not part of this cool gang. Super high-achiever Kaiya is trying to forget her frustration with her drug-addicted sister as well as dealing with pressure from the popular girls to lose her virginity. Mason, footy jock with the physique to match, is coming to terms with his secret desire for his best mate, Jared. And Jared wants a week off from his relationship with Val so he can have sex with as many girls as possible.
But the party takes a dangerous turn when Val is drugged and a man is later found dead on the beach. Blame, fear, mistrust, coverups, power plays and dark secrets tear the group apart and expose the deadly tensions beneath the surface.
The Brink is a raw, powerful novel that pulls no punches in its authentic exploration of masculinity, sexuality, mental health, drug and alcohol use, relationships and sex. Holden Sheppard takes the teenage experience to the next level.

wow..
Omg, loved it. I was so wrong with my thoughts on what had happened to a main character. Then once I finished I spent ages thinking, its 2025 Mason wanders into some Perth club to see Zeke (yeah cross over) behind the bar covering a shift whilst uni is on a break. Hammer is at a table chatting to Charlie about Charlie's latest single.
Loved every minute of both books. Thank you for the words you write.

Gritty, intriguing and surprisingly deep for a story about Leavers
Bit of a slow burn but once it gets it’s feet underneath it, a great story with a surprising degree of nuance.
Enjoyable on the surface, ripe for a deeper examination as well. Well performed with each POV well defined but with other characters voice still clear and in character despite multiple readers.

A great second novel from Holden Sheppard. Expectations were high after Invisible Boys and this book did not disappoint. Love the similar multiple first person narrator structure like IB, but this story was completely unique and kept surprising throughout. Highly recommend!

Gripping!
I listened to this with high expectations after ‘Invisible boys’ and I wasn’t disappointed. A story of a group of leavers in Western Australia, I was hooked into the story straight away. I really enjoy stories with multiple narrators, and the story was well told using this style. Despite a couple of mis-pronunciations of local place names, the narrators did a good job. Thoroughly recommended.
