About this listen

The New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye and The Rose Code returns with a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse during the McCarthy era.

Washington, D.C., 1950

Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, an all-female boarding house in the heart of the US capital, where secrets hide behind respectable facades.

But when the mysterious Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbours – a poised English beauty, a policeman’s daughter, a frustrated female baseball star, and a rabidly pro-McCarthy typist – into an unlikely friendship.

Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their troubled lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own. And when a shocking act of violence tears the house apart, the Briar Club must decide once and for all: who is the true enemy in their midst?

Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test.

I couldn’t stop listening which I liken to not being able to put a book down. As always Kate Quinn’s characters are well formed, have depth and are interesting. The weave of intertwined plots keep you guessing right until the end. The narration by Saskia Maarleveld is top notch as always, adding a voice to the mental picture you have off the characters. Definitely my favourite of the Quinn novels!

So much more than a murder mystery, you fall in love with the characters and want the best possible outcome for them! I love how the story develops through the individual stories of the ladies and Pete. When I finished I had to go back to the beginning to see if I could pick up some clues I didn’t notice along the way. Excellent writing and fabulous narration! Definitely recommend this book!

Having been born into a highly dysfunctional family in the 1950s I was glued to the themes and the characters developed The backdrop of the Korean war, the scurge of Communism, working women, domestic violence..these I knew. I didn't want this novel to end. My highest praise.

Character development intertwined with a riveting plot.
