Publisher's Summary

Two murders. An abandoned asylum. Will a mysterious former patient help untangle the dark truth?

The body of an elderly woman has been found in the bowels of a derelict asylum on the banks of the Thames. As Detective Lew Kirby and his partner begin their investigation, another body is discovered in the river nearby. How are the two murders connected?

Before long, the secrets of Blackwater Asylum begin to reveal themselves. There are rumours about underground bunkers and secret rooms, unspeakable psychological experimentation, and a dark force that haunts the ruins, trying to pull back in all those who attempt to escape. Urban explorer Connie Darke, whose sister died in a freak accident at the asylum, is determined to help Lew expose its grisly past. Meanwhile Lew discovers a devastating family secret that threatens to turn his life upside down.

As his world crumbles around him, Lew must put the pieces of the puzzle together to keep the killer from striking again. Only an eccentric former patient really knows the truth - but will he reveal it to Lew before it’s too late?

A one book

Oh I am disappointed there isn’t another book by mr Kane. I only have one objection and that there were too many characters. I got so confused. But even so I really enjoyed it. Please write another.

Not for me

I can't say if this was good or bad. I got all the way through it. It just didn't fully hold my attention. Found myself kind of zoning out. Then trying to figure out where the story was.

I thought it would be great and was looking forward to it. It had everything I love British accent, bodies in an asylum and apparently my new thing urban exploring.

For some reason I just couldn't get into it. I mean it was well written and a good story. It just didn't lay out the way I was expecting (hoping).

Another book killed by poor narration

This may be a great story. I couldn't tell you. The volume of the narration was so random and annoying that I just couldn't take it past the first few chapters. I wear my ear buds and listen to books, music and podcasts all the time while doing all kinds of activities. I just don't have time or patience to keep stopping and skipping back to pick up one mumbled word or phrase that may or may not be important. Extremely frustrating. The narration can make or break audible books. This gentleman goes on my short but non-negotiable list of narrators that will cause me not to buy an audible book no matter how much I want the story itself.

Loved it!

It took my a bit to settle into it, but when I did, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I loved British books, for one and add in great characters and a freaking weird abandoned asylum and I was hooked!

Is it over yet???

Every bit of this story was underwhelming, the story was scattered, and the characters boring. Don’t waste your money on this one.

Couldn’t follow the narrator

I’ve missed about 30 % of the story because the narrator whispers the second half of the sentences it’s very confusing. So I just can’t review this book. Never had this happen before. Very frustrating

good luck with this one

the book was okay but it was alm8ost in possible to follow the story. the narrator had a lovely voice but everytime spoke for a character I could barelyunderstand what he said. between his accent and the fact that the volume of his voice was extremely low, I missed whole portions of the book and had difficulty following the storyline.

Good

Enjoyed listening to this novel. There were times I had to back up because the voice was hard for me to pick up. New written for me, will look for other books by Kane.

Had potential

The story would have been interesting if it wasn’t so confusing. I couldn’t keep all the characters straight and remember who was who. The narrator was good at doing different voices but the volume of his voice would fluctuate a lot and go so low you couldn’t even hear what he was saying.

Creepy atmospheric debut

This is the debut crime thriller from this author and although the synopsis sounded interesting I wasn’t expecting much. How wrong I was. This is a superb police procedural. The setting of an old abandoned asylum with old abandoned tunnels gives the book a creepy, chilling feel straight away. There’s quite a big cast of characters, but unlike some reviewers, I didn’t find it at all confusing. I was gripped from the start and the story moved at a good pace with plenty of twists and turns. Loved the character of Lew Kirby and look forward to the next in the series.

I enjoyed the narration by Matthew Loyd Davies.

Compelling narration of a great story

I only recently discovered this narrator, he is fantastic, totally pulled me into this story and I listened to it in pretty much 2 days. A great detective story and nothing too gruesome or unnecessarily sexual, which was good.

There are alot of characters and at times I struggled with who was who but I kept with it and it paid off. It was a fascinating read with good detective work with historical event in the mix.

Brilliant

I am delighted to have discovered this author. The story was original, ,and the narrator Matthew Lloyd Davies one of the best .
There were a lot of characters in it, and a couple of times I had to go back and listen again. Otherwise a totally enjoyable book.
I look forward to the next one.
