Publisher's Summary

It's seven in the morning. The Bantrys wake to find the body of a young woman in their library. She is wearing evening dress and heavy make-up, which is now smeared across her cheeks. But who is she? How did she get there? And what is the connection with another dead girl, whose charred remains are later discovered in an abandoned quarry?

Not what I expected - better!

I’d watched the Telemovie of this book a number of times and was sure the story would be the same for the book, but was genuinely happy to discover differences, including a different murderer. Recommended book for Agatha Christie fans.

Stephanie Cole narrates this beautifully.

Would you listen to The Body in the Library again? Why?

Absolutely. All Agatha Christie novels are brilliant in my opinion. It flowed easily and kept me interested all the way through. There is humour in this book you don't expect.

What other book might you compare The Body in the Library to, and why?

Any other Agatha Christie, Miss Marple novel. All brilliant.

What does Stephanie Cole bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Stephanie Cole was born to narrate these novels, her voice and timing was immaculate.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to drift off to sleep and find audible great at bedtime but this was so good I listened until the early hours.

Any additional comments?

Some narrators voices are quite jarring and put me off buying the novel on audible but Stephanie Cole has now become a firm favourite. Enjoyed this and will listen to again.

Brilliant Body in The Library

Characters, actions and attitudes obviously somewhat of their time, the late 1940s /early 1950s of Mr Gove's imagination, but an ingenious, well told story for all that.

For me, Joan Hickson IS Miss Marple, so I was a bit doubtful about buying this reading by Stephanie Cole, but SC is brilliant and, from a technical point of view, actually a better reader. Thoroughly recommended.

Brilliant performance

Would you consider the audio edition of The Body in the Library to be better than the print version?

This book is beautifully performed, like being in a theatre.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Body in the Library?

The twists and turns

What does Stephanie Cole bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Brilliant characterisations, great pace, I was hooked! She has a lovely non-irritating voice that does not detract from the story.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed and smiled throughout the journey, but it has very sad points, very raw too, which Miss Marple acknowledges during the story.

Any additional comments?

One of the most exciting yet sad stories, takes us back to a different part of history that is difficult to understand at times, with modern eyes.

Another great investigation by Miss Marple

Well told by Stephanie Cole, good characterisation too for all the persons. Bit of a struggle to see how the real culprit was detected but as a true Marple fan I didn't mind that.

Excellent

Superbly read. You are hooked from the beginning. A definite must for those who enjoy crime fiction. Once you start this audio book, you will want to keep going so that you can solve the crime before it finishes.

An excellent mystery

This is one of my all time favourite Agatha Christie stories. It has a few twists and a clever plot. Stephanie Cole does an excellent job with the narration.

Finally !

After struggling to find Marple books where the narration works (Joan hickson, whilst great on screen, is not as good at just narration), I got the mark with this. I was hopeful having listened to Stephanie Cole in other productions and was not disappointed. She gives a subtle performance with out giving hammy accents. I suppose there's an argument for perhaps not having enough difference between some characters voices, but it does just enough for me to work. If you hunt around online you can find rosemary leach reading a couple and she is the best, but not available anymore. 🙁
