Publisher's Summary

A large country mansion. A locked room. A gruesome murder.

Russian oligarch Alexander Volkov has invited 1,000 guests to a party at his palatial Surrey residence, Westgrave Hall. But while giving a private tour of the library, a gunman kills Volkov, wounding his ex-wife and slaying her new beau. Nothing makes sense to DCI Craig Gillard. In the blood-spattered crime scene there are no forensic traces of anyone else involved, CCTV shows no one entered or left the library, and everyone seems to have an alibi. Is it a crime of revenge, the squaring of a love triangle, or a Russian government operation? Could the victims have simply shot each other? Gillard’s eventual discovery is shocking even to him.

A gripping crime thriller from a master of the genre, The Bodies at Westgrave Hall will leave you guessing until the very end.

Not his best

I loved Nick Louths work. But this was shallow and confusing. Perhaps too many characters. I would miss this one if I were you.

Listened to it in one day

I like to read a series in order. That said, this edition can be read as a stand alone and easily followed as the storyline does not require a background of the usual cast of characters. The editors synopsis sets the scene, no need to repeat it here. The elements of the crime story move quickly, the focus is on the who is the killer, lots of red herrings, but fair. Truly entertaining!

First rate whodunit.

This story has many wonderful twists and turns, and the narration is excellent. Kept me engaged throughout.

Disappointed!

This was the least Favorite of the series. It’s hard for me to put a finger on exactly why it disappointed me

Crazy Great - Just About Perfect

I could not stop listening. Incredibly rich, twisty murder mystery/espionage/revenge plot. Colorful characters. Great writing. Never saw the end coming. One of the best books in a superb series. It could easily stand alone if you have not listened to/ read any of the others. Narrator is first rate too.

Didn't see the end coming

Not bad. Steers you in a direction and then turns left. Narration is good 👍

twisty journey

I always enjoy both this author and the narrator and this book is no exception. This title can be appreciated as a stand alone but previous titles provide the character backgrounds along with good stories.

QUITE ENTERTAINING

Entertaining story with interesting characters and a satisfactory conclusion. Excellent narration, as usual, by York.

Many layered

I absolutely love the narrator . He gives life and personality to all of the characters .
The story was interesting and kept me listening.
I adore audio books and have since the tape cassette days. I also love literary mysteries of all sorts.
This series just gets better and better. I put off listening to it because It did not catch my attention right away I have many authors that I buy their series as soon as published. But this one was funny clever poignant

Good story, bad narration

Love this series and the characters. This particular story was very interesting with good twists and turns. However, this narrator CANNOT do female voices - they sound like whiny muppets in every book! It’s impossible to then picture any female characters as competent or appealing in any way. The male characters sound great, so do better!

Gillard goes international

Have followed Louth's developing series with some enjoyment. I'm a sucker for grim police details in personal domestic situations, but there was a sense of things repeating themselves with the last couple of books. Clearly the author too felt he needed a jolt and here it is. By looking (with admirable intensity) into the world of Russian oligarchs in the UK, plus deconstructing the wholly appropriate whodunit setting of the country house party, Louth has allowed Craig Gillard a taste of the Bond world - international spies, aston martin, golden gun and all. The unveiling of the mechanics of the crime is held back right to the end and, like Bond, is both preposterous and absolutely credible. On the down side, there are whole 'scenes' not included that I would have really enjoyed - the final debrief meeting with the UK security reps and ministers for example, Craig reflecting with his wife as to how police work evolves, more details of ridiculously fine dining - for which there are so many opportunities - more menus at the Dorchester and recipes from Kazakhstan would make this reader happy. The one and only thing I had a real problem with was picturing the great fossil hall where the crime occurs. I needed an image! Louth gets better and better. I can't wait for the next story, if it is as carefully researched and crafted as this one is.

not a good book

I have read and enjoyed all of the craig gillard books to date and waited eagerly for this one to arrive. I have to say that i could not wait to get to the end of it. I found it to be the most boring book i have listen to and was very disappointed with this. There is a lot of irrelevant information given especially at the start and it did not capture my interest at all throughout this. The only reason i did not return is that i am ever optimistic that the next one will be better and be back to the exciting story lines from before. Unless you are a gillard fan then i would not recommend this book

Annoying narration

I can’t for the life of me understand why the narrator decided on moronic voices for most of the police officers. The text shows them speaking good English in well constructed sentences but he makes them sound as though they can barely read or write. Why?

The story is a bit far-fetched, not as good as previous books in the series, but it’s made so much worse by this annoying narration. I hope the author decides on a different voice actor for future books. I won’t be listening to this one again.

lacking punch

I've listened to all of Nick Louth's books narrated by Marston York. His South London and Russian accents were a little annoying after a while, and when the characters should have been shouting, the narrator's tone didn't change.
Overall the story was good but lacked punch.

Different not in a good way

I’ve read and listened to several in this series and always found them intriguing plots with believable characters. This was a lot of boring detail about wealthy people wasting money and their lives. The sex parts were laughable stereotype male reactions to irresistible sirens! Wasted my money!

Odd natation!

Brilliant narration until “doing” women’s voices. All the women sound either weak or stupid. Hard to believe that big media star Sophie would sound so pathetic. It’s great that she’s a northern lass but she doesn’t have to sound like an air head, which she clearly isn’t supposed to be! She’s supposed to be the sort of woman who can really engage an audience. Just doesn’t work.

Complex twisty turns plot with lots of different characters very well differentiated by the narrator.
