Story
In the wake of the Solar Union’s stunning victory over the Tokomak - the masters of the galactic community - humanity has been invited to send a diplomatic mission to the Kingdom of Harmonious Order, one of the oldest and most significant races in known space. It is an opportunity that cannot be missed, a chance to forge ties with a powerful ally. And so a lone starship is dispatched to the galactic core to open discussions. But when that starship runs into a deadly trap, she and her crew must battle their way home before they are merely the first casualties in a renewed war.

Publisher's Summary
In the wake of Earth's collapse into chaos, Captain Hoshiko Stuart made the mistake of speaking her mind - and was exiled six months from Sol to a naval base in an unexplored and uncontacted sector. Placed in command of a single squadron of starships, she expected nothing but boredom.
But when she discovers an alien race threatening to exterminate all other races within the sector, Hoshiko and her squadron are drawn into a war to stop them, even if it means forging an alliance with aliens who may themselves become a threat to humanity and building an empire that may alienate her from her family once and for all.

Solid, military-based sci-fi
A solid, enjoyable 'Star Trek' style (military- and space-warfare-based) expansion of the Stewart universe. A promising and dramatic continuation of the narrative which sustains interest through its continuity and pacing. I was very happy to overlook some relatively predictable script and simplistic characterisation on this basis. I very much hope the series continues.

Riveting
This is book three in the Learning Experience series. Our protagonist, Captain Hoshiko Stuart, spoke her mind and is now exiled for six months from Sol to a naval base far away in the unexplored sector. She is in command of a single squadron of Starships. They discover an alien race threating to exterminate all other races. She joins some other alien races to defeat them. Of course, she makes commitments and agreements beyond her authority but they are a long way from Sol and the seat of government.
Our hero is a likable character with courage and honor. She is sort of like David Weber’s character Honor Harrington. The book is well written and the pace is fairly fast. Nuttall creates some interesting and extremely likeable characters. Most often he has strong women in his stories and in this book as the lead character. I like that Nuttall did not do a lot of rehashing background from prior books in the series. He did just enough to trigger recall of the history of a situation or person. This is a good action packed get- away- from- it- all space opera.
The book is almost 12 hours long. Christian Rummel does an excellent job narrating the story. Rummel is an award-winning audiobook narrator.

Great Performance<br />
Christian Rumme was excellent. Clear crisp narration. Now I have two performers I truly like. The other is Mark Boyette. From Chapter 15, it's all military sci-fi at its best. I totally ignored everyone today just to enjoy this audio book to the end. It's a "Page Turner" LOL.

Not as interesting as I expected the series to be
This series has gone down for me with each new volume. Perhaps I am jaded having grown up with the best and the classic and read thousands of books. My mind wandered a lot during this, and I actually downloaded and finished another book before finishing this one.
It's still a good series, and there is little of Nuttal's diatribes against politics, education and society. Christian Rummel is always an easy listen.

listen to the prelude and then skip to Chapter 15ish. Nothing happens really until then.
The mini romance was also worthless and I think took away from the book.
Star battles were good. Reminded me of the suspense during my days of playing Eve Online.

Almost jump the shark
The main Stewart character flipped from recognizing her importance to the "Great Alliance" to risking herself hoping a freighter on a recon mission with an ensign with little to no flying experience.

Hochiko fail.
Love this series. Hated the character Hochiko. It was to the point that part way through the book I started rooting for her demise. I was all in at the beginning but the character seemed to come from nowhere & felt like the author could have been better served sticking to the characters established in book 1 or 2 in this series. I regret spending a credit on this particular book.

Brilliant, fast moving series.
Any additional comments?
I've seen some very poor reviews regarding this series from reviewers that obviously do not know the skill and story telling ability of the author. I feel that such negative reviews are clearly designed to do damage - 1 star - get real - In today's cut throat world authors that score that low do not get into production nevermind publish 30+ audiobooks and have such a fan following.
My honest impression of this series was one of delight. Definately a must read series and I am as eager to read book four as I was the second and third installments.
