About this listen

May 1992, and after four LAPD officers were acquitted after the savage beating of Rodney King, Los Angeles is ablaze. As looting and burning take over the city, law and order are swept away in a tidal wave of violence. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. With no effective police presence on the streets, murder just got a whole lot easier - and investigating them got a whole lot harder.

Escorted by National Guard soldiers from murder scene to murder scene, Harry and his colleagues are only able to do the bare minimum in terms of collecting evidence. And for Harry that's not enough. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice, and her tragedy starts to eat into his soul. But then, 20 years later, Harry finds himself working in the Open Unsolved Unit, and suddenly the past comes back to haunt him once again, in a way he could never have imagined.

Read by Michael McConnohie. Michael McConnohie has had a long career as both an on-camera and voiceover actor. He was two of the original Transformers as well as a GI Joe in the cartoon series which is still airing today, and has lent his voice to countless TV shows and motion pictures. He has been an audiobook presence for decades. From true crime to fiction to self-help, he's read just about every kind of audiobook there is. He's an AudioFile Earphones award winner for Stuart M. Kaminsky's Always Say Goodbye, and was part of the Grammy-nominated Lincoln-Douglas Debates with David Straithairn and Richard Dreyfuss. Michael makes his home in Southern California.

Ive been listening to the Harry Bosch series for a few months now and this is the first one I struggled to get hooked on. Definitely started off VERY slowly. The last half of the story picked up and it delivered the goods in the end.

Exciting last half of the Novel

I’m hooked on Bosch. I’ve listened to every book in the series up until this one (except for Angel’s Flight as I didn’t find a narrator I liked for that one but great book). I won’t be continuing listening to this one, I’ll rather be buying the written version as I find the narrator to be too one toned and really distracts me from the storyline. I loved listening to Bosch himself, Titus Welliver, narrate and the books narrated by Len Cariou were fabulous as well…Dick Hill did a very decent job too.

Love the book, don’t enjoy the narrator

This is a great, gripping tale. The only let down is the performance. It feels stale and rigid by far the worst narrator we have had in this series.

Wonder story, poor performance.
