Publisher's Summary

'It looks like he died from injuries sustained during a fall....' Best-selling author Jasper Fforde begins an effervescent new series.

It's Easter in Reading - a bad time for eggs - and no one can remember the last sunny day. Humpty Dumpty, well-known nursery favourite, large egg, ex-convict and former millionaire philanthropist, is found shattered beneath a wall in a shabby area of town.

Following the pathologist's careful reconstruction of Humpty's shell, Detective Inspector Jack Spratt and his Sergeant, Mary Mary, are soon grappling with a sinister plot involving cross-border money laundering, the illegal Bearnaise sauce market, corporate politics and the cut and thrust world of international chiropody.

As Jack and Mary stumble around the streets of Reading in Jack's lime green Austin Allegro, the clues pile up, but Jack has his own problems to deal with. And on top of everything else, the JellyMan is coming to town....

brilliant as always

Fforde’s story is hilarious and excellent as always, an excellent whodunnit that links in beautifully with his Thursday Next series. And Thomas’s impeccable narration gives it life. I especially liked the scene with the bacon sandwich.

Quirky pleasing listen

Narration was very good as well apart from Mrs Singh that was just cringe worthy.

Great fun!

Clever, funny...Good entertainment and very well read. Enjoyably zany plot with surprisingly believable characters, despite all the Nursery Rhyme mayhem.

Impressive

Still has annoying music but as always brilliantly written. The world is so close to our own you feel you can visit it and you know the characters already.
The narration was full of characters but the female characters sounded a weird.
All in all I really enjoyed this first in series book and will be starting the next immediately.

Ingenious & delightful

A story that has everything. Simply terrific. It travels at a fine pace throughout, never dipping from the perfect blend of crime story and parody.

Absolutely fantastic

I loved this so much I'm immediately following it with the second one in the series.
The narration was one of the best I've heard.
I didn't like his Thursday books but thoroughly enjoyed his ' The Constant Rabbit' and after I'd finished that I listened to this one.
I can't recommend highly enough, they're the perfect antidote for all the lock down lunacy.

Another Fforde masterpiece

Great, enjoyed this story immensely. Jasper Fforde has the brilliant capacity to build parallel worlds, very close to our own, which are believable and with great comic story lines that keep you on the ball and smile at the same time.
Narration was excellent with a good once and lovely voices and accents.
Onwards to the next Jasper Fforde novel and story.
