Publisher's Summary

In The Big Melt, Rolling Stone contributing editor and leading environmental journalist Jeff Goodell takes the listener up close and personal to one of the world’s most remote locations—Western Antarctica—and to the foot of the staggeringly important Thwaites Glacier.

Join Goodell aboard the Nathaniel B. Palmer, an ice-capable research ship, on its unprecedented journey to study the effects of climate change on the Thwaites Glacier. Get to know why scientists are studying this glacier and discover the chilling facts that make this sheet of ice a real ticking time bomb of climate change—no matter where you live on the planet.

Mr. Goodell’s spirited reporting and narration is augmented with audio recordings courtesy of reporter Carolyn Beeler from the public radio program The World, providing listeners with an incredible sense of what Antarctica sounds like. There are also keen and fascinating insights into the day-to-day workings of a research ship speeding toward one of the fiercest places on earth.

"The Big Melt" phenomenon has shattering, real consequences for all of us. This Audible Original is produced with Rolling Stone in conjunction with Columbia Journalism Review’s Covering Climate Change initiative.

Fantastic storytelling-a very concerning storyline

This is brilliant writing by a superb storyteller. The performance is excellent. I especially liked that this was read by the author, his own voice speaking the words of his own experience. It felt like we have been personally invited to join in this adventure, and learn with him and the climate scientists on the research ship, like we are on the ship ourselves.

The presentation and selection of material to include in this book was excellent. It takes the listener on a journey of discovery, is engaging, insightful, educational and informative, and I found I looked forward to progressing through the book, and wanted to continue to tune in for more as it was coming to an end.

Jeff Goodell has done very well to capture the scale of Thwaites glacier - "The doomsday glacier" and its importance to our rapidly changing world. He explains that this is "a glacier whose fate is inextricably linked with the future of civilisation" and speaks of the reality of seawater rise as an impact from climate change. This will have real and devastating consequences for everyone on the planet.

The book speaks the urgency of the situation, and of the barriers, and is a message of what is to come if people do not pay attention and make suitable decisions and changes before it is too late. A very important message which cannot afford to be ignored.

This was a very worthwhile Audible Original. I gained a lot of knowledge and further understandings from this book and will be happy to listen to more of Jeff Goodell's audios. Thank you for your tremendous effort in bringing this information to the general population and creating a picture of our changing world in words that we can all understand.
