It’s hard for me to pin down exactly how I feel about this one. It is very well written and has a strong sense of textual integrity — all the elements work together and create an organic, unified whole.

However, I couldn’t connect with the protagonist, and that ultimately undermined the experience for me. I didn’t relate to him or his world, and as a result I never felt truly immersed in the story.

That disconnect is a major issue for a novel like this — one that, much like Insomnia by Stephen King, operates in the liminal space between sleep, dreams, and wakefulness, with a writing style that deliberately mirrors the subject matter. Without emotional or psychological immersion, the effect of that technique fell flat for me.
